my daughter never had a pacifier, to be honest I never offered her one. The idea of havingto get up during the night if she used it to settle and lost it didn't appeal to me at all. She had a comforter from 3 months old and at 19 months still sleeps with it. The comforter is a 30cm square of material which is satin on one side and soft toy fabric with a teddy bear head in the middle on the other. Kind of a cross between a blanket and a soft toy. It wasn't large enough for her to straggle herself with when she was a baby, and if she put it over her face she could still breathe through it. She used to suck on the tag when she was little and now she just cuddles it. I have two so it can be washed easily.

my son refused his pacifier at 2 months also, but he was usually at my breast anyways. I feel your baby boy is getting enough love and comfort from you, he feels he does not need the pacifier. Children who do not need a comfort item seem to be more independant in later life. Good for you.

I had 3 children and none of them would take a pacifier. I tried many different kinds and shapes and they just didn't like them. My daughter sucked her thumb but neither of my sons ever used anything.

My daughter's 4 months old and won't take one. She just spits it out and looks at me like I'm crazy.

My second son, now thieteen, wasn't interested in a pacifier. Some kids prefer a some else like ablanket, stuffed toy, something that comforts them. Do not worry. If he gets fussy just comfort him and offer an alternative. My fist son, now eighteen, couldn't have enough pacifiers. Some doctors say it is good to help develop their jaw muscles others are against it. Use creativity and be patient. It is not umcommon and he will be fine. Best wishes.

My son didn't want it. We tried again when he was a little older and he would grab it out of his mouth and fling it away.

my children could not figure out how to keep them in their mouths. It was really a blessing. We did not have to go thru the hassle of weaning either of them off of them.

Both of my boys refused a pacifier. I breastfed both of them, and as soon as 1 week both of them refused to take a pacifier. They never resorted to thumb sucking either, so I was their pacifier for a while, but in the long run they were better off. According to their doctor pacifiers can contribute to ear infections and they can be a hard habit to kick. So don't worry, it will get easier, he will learn to self soothe.

I'm so jealous!!! both my boys took one, but I'll admit, it was nice to have it at nap/bedtime. But weaning them from it was NOT fun.

at about 3 months old, my son dropped his in the middle of the local mall and never seemed to want one after that. He never really took it anyway, other than occasionally at nap time. He did start taking it a little bit while he was teething, but not much. He would just throw them. take advantage of it because the older he gets, the harder it will be to break him of it.

My son never took on to one either (and don't get me wrong it didn't matter really however he always seemed to just eat to soothe himself and I didn't like that either as he is already a BIG boy). We had the ones from the hospital he never really liked and then the NUK brand. I thought he would just end up not being a nook baby as many aren't. Well, at 5 months old I realized I had a 6 mos+ package of nooks I received as a baby shower gift so I thought I'd try them. As soon as I popped that in his mouth he took right on to it. I never realized how much of a difference shape matters but it does. He still refuses the NUK brand pacifiers and LOVES his MAM pacifiers. I really couldn't believe it but maybe try a different brand if your baby is just sucking to soothe themselves.

my little girl refused to use a pacifier. which is great, i don't like them and see too many mums just shoving them into thier kids mouths for no reason (one mum i know let her kid suck on one till he was 7!!!!!!!!)

anyways, she always chewed on the handle, or threw it across the playpen for fun. So i gave up getting them.

My son would never take one either. Our Pediatrician said some kids like them, others like their thumbs but you can't force one or the other. He was right - my son is 4 months and now loves his thumb. That was only a recent thing though - before a few weeks ago he wouldn't even suck his thumb.

My son refused it right from the start...im glad he did now.I never have to look for the thing, no disinfecting it and worrying he may choke on it and not having to go through the hassel weaning him off it! i figured he would find something himself to calm him...and he has, he fiddles with his hair!...goodluck in whatever your choice

my daughter was on one, then one day we went out in public and god forbid we forgot it!! so my husband was like, " i got this!" and made a "homemade" one, a regular bottle with a stopper so no air gets through, and she's 5 months, (the invention was at 2 months) and i put her to sleep with it, let her entertain herself with it.. and its good practice for bottle holding! i recommend this to all moms! sometimes they just want something to suck on and the view of the bottle makes their day i guess haha.

my first son wanted the dummy only for comfort at first then he didn't really need it he just like to hold it in his hand but never sucked on it and that was at about 8/9 months, my second son absolutely refused then one day he tried it for some reason then never again, i have a third on the way and now i wonder what will this one do with the dummy issue..LOL, but in saying all that i still never left home without one just in case...LOL you just never know.

my 4 month old will not take one. I am not used to it. His brothers took one until after 2 yrs. He doesn't take his thumb either. It was much easier to calm his brothers b/c the paci would soothe them. Since he won't take anything, it is hard to soothe him. I am just taking it in stride.

Our daughter would only take it when she was a newborn and even then we had to do the old swap the bottle for the dummy trick lol. I wouldn't worry about it, he's actually better off without as it can damage his teeth later in life. My daughter is 9 months old now and I just cuddle her if she's upset which is so much more rewarding than just shoving a dummy in her mouth anyway. Good luck :)

My son is 2months 5days. The first 2wks he was home he probley took the nuk 5-10 times. As he has gotten older he will not take his nuk at all. I have tried the one from the hospital (the gumdrop) & we also got a free one in the mail i think a Playtex one. When he did take the nuk the couple of time he really didn't have a favorite. Which is fine with me cuz that's just 1 less thing I will hafta ween him off of.

I didn't want to use a dummy at all but on the second night when we couldn't consol her we tried the Advent dummy (she also had a Happy Wonders one) and she was silent and went to sleep. My reluctance was a friend had told me she would get up twice an hour to put the dummy back in as her baby could not self settle. One the other hand my mother and I were both thumb suckers and you can't take that away, it lasted well past 6 years of age. One thing with Teagan is we were constantly told she was a collicky baby (cried all the time for no reason) We dipped in her dummy in Infants friend (recommended dose of 5 drops per whatever written on the bottle) and our non sleeping baby would be distracted enough to suck and sleep as she loves it. Now we do not leave home without it and our friends and family know about the bottle of "shut up". Tonight she was way overdue for a sleep and overtired and screaming, she stopped when she saw the bottle and opened her mouth and was asleep within minutes. She is now 34 weeks old (8 months) and we have been dipping her dummy in it since she was about 4 weeks with cronich wind. It heaps with so many issues it's great. I have another friend who's baby does not take a dummy and she give her infants friend in a bottle and we both believe it is a god send. Congratulations on your son and that you have not let this bother you, but if you find you need one, try a different shape and a touch of infants friend (if I offer any other shape than Advent she sucks the infants friend off, spits it out and screams for more.)

Neither of my kids took a paci unless I held it in their mouths. They didn't dislike it, but just had the tongue-thrust thing going on. My sister said that her son did the same thing, and she just held it in his mouth until he took it (when he was about 4 months old). I thought that a bit ridiculous, myself. :-) The point of giving them a pacifier is so that they can be soothed *without* me, and if I'm going to have to be there anyway, I'm not going to get them attached to a pacifier that I will later have to break them of!

My son is almost four months and he takes a pacifier sometimes. There's no rhyme or reason to when he wants it...it's not like it's only at bedtimes or when he's hungry or whatever...he wants it when he wants it. The only thing that is consistent is that he only wants it if it's upside down in his mouth. I don't know how he can tell but he can.
