The best advice I got was to make it fast. One year olds have short attention spans, as I'm sure you're aware. My girl's party was ballooned themed. Lots of easy and cheap stuff to do with balloons and balloon paper cut outs. we opened gifts as soon as all the guests had arrived. And we did it quickly. opened a gift, said thanks and on to the next. It sounds rude, but we didn't make it to 6 gifts before she was done and started to crawl away. Then after gifts we went straight to the smash cake. After that we cleaned her up, let her loose and the partyers got their snacks and cake. And then we just hung out, watching the little one play in the pile of her new things. It was a good time.

My sons 1st birthday we did planes, trains, and automobiles. I did a bunch of decorations and the tickets looked like boarding passes. I bought a ball bounce and put a bunch of little wooden cars (dollar store was great for this) all around. He had fun and all the little boys loved playing with the cars. I was happy, he was happy.
