I do not have a lot of family support to help with caring for my 7 year old son. What has helped us avoid costly childcare expenses, is developing a playdate network. We initially do activities as families to establish an understanding of one anothers parenting styles/ expectations and go from there, taking turns with playdate/childcare activties, ranging from hanging out at home to family vacations.

Our family friends have been yet another wonderfully loving and cost saving benefit of having children!

I should also add that my sons friends are those that he repeatedly brings up in conversation and has an obvious connection with.

We started extending the network by connecting with families of my sons preschool friends. It kept extending as his activities did ( gymnastics, swimming, basketball, kindergarten, etc...) Meetings begin with park playdates, then move in areas of mutual interests (favorite restaurants, zoo, museums, lego store..). As trust grows then we begin to invite the family into our home. Currently we have 6 families with whom we have created a solid connection with and can call one another within hours notice for care.

Hmm that sounds like a good idea...I wonder if I can get some of my mom's group ladies to use this strategy even if it's a couple hours 1 a month it'll really be helpful.
