I need help on my sons spongebob birthday cake

My son is having a Spngebob second birthday and i am having trouble with the cake. My sister is making an amazing cake that will have three teirs, colored blue, decorated with flowers, seaweed, and I am trying to find the characters to place on each teir. If any one knows where to find mini characters, I have the Spongebob (it came with one of his toys) but dk where to find the others seperately from toys. The problem Im having is I have to help her make extra decor. to put on it. I'd like it to edible but its no big deal if I cant do that. I want to make alot of starfish, coral, a jelly fish (to sit flat on the cake, like a sticker lol) And I am not sure realy what products there are that are cheap and save to sit on the cake if it is non edible. If I have to I can draw with icing the jellyfish, but the coral and starfish I want the actual thing all over it. The coral I thought of making them out of dough, but I know that would be too heavy, it wouldnt hold on the second or top teir. Does anyone know of any ideas that I can make them out of that will be safe, and do you think that food coloring would be easy way to color them, I am not experienced at this lol and not sure if the food color will bring the amount of color I need. Any advice would be great! Thanks in advance!

Hey. I am not sure where you can get these edible or even non-edible characters but here is one interesting write-up that I found on homemade cake decoration. I think this will help you.

Thanks for the ideas! I def. decided that everything going on the cake will be edible, expect the characters. I still just have a spongebob figure, but going to look soon in the toys stores for more. I dont really mind having to buy them just because I know my son will play with them lol.

My sister said she has something like an edible paint, dont know what its called, but its prob something like what your talking about, didnt think of it but toothpick should work really great, anything to make it easier! And i really like the candy idea too! liquorish can be part of the jellyfish and the taffy should work great with sculpting the coral. and taste alot better than fondand (sp?) too!

ASK FRIENDS IF YOU CAN BORROW THEIR SPONGE BOB TOYS. I USE WILTON CAKE DECORATING FOOD COLORING. YOU CAN BUY SOME BASIC COLORS AND MIX TO MAKE OTHER COLORS INSTEAD OF BUYING ALL DIFFERENT COLORS. I USE A TOOTH PICK TO HELP COLOR THE FROSTING BECAUSE THEY COME IN A LITTLE CONTAINER AND ARE A REALLY THICK GEL LIKE STUFF. START WITH JUST A TINY BIT THEN STIR AND ADD MORE IF U NEED TO.
