When I decorate my child's bedrooms with wallpaper. I always buy a spare roll so in time if it gets damaged I can repair it with the spare. So, the bedroom stays looking good for a long time. Also, if you want to paint their bedrooms use washable paint. it just makes life easier. Just wash with soapy warm water and it will be perfect.

We are in an apartment and it makes no since to paint or paper. I had a lot of leftover clothes pins from an activity at VBS and framed some coark board for a bulliten board, and then covered tham with some fabric that I had made her clothes with the previous summer (I always save scraps). It turned out really cute and she loves putting her craft projects on it.

I never paint or wall-paper as we are a military family and move often.
I make wall hangings either of colorful fabric or posters that can be changed easily. if you just sew (or glue if you don't sew) a simple hem and then hang from a light stick it is very child friendly and easy to deal with.
For adult bedrooms I like to make pillows and then frame some matching fabric. I keep the rest of the room white and plain.
