I don't think it is that he refuses. Try standing him next to a chair or a table. Then grab a favorite toy or book and hold it just far enough away so he has to reach or take a step to get it. Then give the item to him weather or not he walks. Give him over exaggerated praise and repeat by holding the item further and further away. This will give him the sense of accomplishment and he will try harder each time.

My son didn't start walking until he is almost 17 months. He was just not ready, and is above average developmentally. Let him grow at his own pace, don't push it!!! Good luck

Don't worry I was the same way my son was so stuborn he just was stuck on crawling with all of his bruises on his knees He did not walk till he was 15 months. My mom always told me they will do it when they are ready. Now he is all over the place.

My kids were both 13 months old before they walked. Now at ages 9 &16 they are both ball players and straight A students. It's often no biggy that they don't walk before 1 year. Your doctor will let you know if there is a problem, just ask at your next visit. I had them check my sons feet at age 2 because they were so small. Nothing wrong with him, just heredity.

Do not worry!!! My oldest was walking at 12 months and my other 2 were both around 14 to 15 months old before they decided it would make things easier if I tried to walk!!! They even crawled backwards more then forwards, it will all work out, just one needs more time then the other ;-)

He's not ready yet! HE will walk when he is. I have 4 kids. My youngest is 4 months, so we haven't reached that milestone with her - but the other 4 didn't even start until after they were 1. Don't rush it though! Trust me - once he starts walking you'll wish he wasn't LOL!

If there isn't a medical reason or a disability, he'll walk when he's ready. My daughter walked at 8 months old. My son walked for the first time the day before he turned one. Don't sweat the small stuff. Just love and encourage him.

no need to rush him, he will get there in his own time, at 11months my son only began to stand on wabbly feet, even that was few seconds and back down. he was 1and half years old when took his 1st steps and even that was 2yrs when was walking without help, but today is running around and wouldnt sit for few moments, enjoy the moments dont rush and push things, it will happen in time when your son is ready! good luck

he will .... my youngest is 17 months and he just started walking 2 months ago he wouldn't walk for anything I started to think he would never walk but the doctor said he was fine just working on his own level....and he was...lol... my oldest was 9 months when he started and my daughter was 12 months ... they do it when they are ready keep your head up MOMMA

Jessica- its okay its not unusual that he doesn't want to walk right now, both of my kids didn't start walking until a year old, one was the day after he turned 1. They will walk when they are ready to, try and enjoy the time before he does start walking, lol, because then he'll be everywhere and getting into everything. Is he crawling or pulling up on stuff? Hi Jessica, I agree with the other ladies he'll walk when he's ready. He will shock you one day and start pulling himself up, walking around furniture. Once he takes off you won't be able to stop him.

dont worry jessica. my son liam was 15 months before he could walk properly. most doctors/health visitors will tell you not to worry unless he's still not walking at 18 months. they all go at their own pace and once he starts you wont be able to stop him! x

i remember when my daughter first started walking she was 9 months old and i took her to the doctor and he asked if she was trying to walk... i put her down on the floor and she ran past him i said did that answer your question lol but take your time when he does start walking and getting into everything he is gonna wear you out

My daughter was 14 months when she started walking and even then she still didn't want to walk, so we would play with her doing things that strengthen her legs. Stood her up at tables so she could try to walk around them. Eventually she did, but she is older now and still doesn't really like to walk unless it's necessary. I think it's their personality.

my son was like that too...he was content to crawl around and when he was like, 13 months he started to stand then started walking shortly after that...just give it time, he will do it when he's ready...if you are really concerned talk to his doc. :-]

You can't make a child walk just because you want him too. :) They all walk at their own pace. Dr.s say that some kids may not walk until after 1 1/2.and that is fine. Just be patient and he will do it all in his own time.

Like everybody else said, Don't rush him. He will walk on his own. My son is 13mth old and enjoys walking only if he holds on to your hands or other objects. He is very scared to let go! It will come with time!

my boys is 14.5 months and 2 weeks ago took 1 step! then last night at my inlaws house he took 4 steps towards me!!! dont rush him! it will happen when uit happens :D

my 6 yr old son didnt walk until 3 days before his first birthday, your son will be fine! Give him time he'll walk when hes ready, until then enjoy the time you have left with him bein your little baby and still being dependant on you, because after he starts walking you'll have hell trying to get him to let you hold him and stuff!!

He will walk when he is ready but try not having to many things in his way that he can hold on too. All you have to do is keep trying and try not to get too frustrated. When he wants a snack try to get him to walk to it.

He's obviously not ready to walk yet, and trying to make him do it is only going to make things worse. He will walk when he wants to, not when you want him to. There are many reason walking is delayed. None of which you should be concerned about for several more months. But if it still bothers you, talk to his doctor at his next appointment.

My son did not walk until he was 14 months old , which is pretty standard. 11 months is kinda early. Just dont pressure him the more you try to force him the more he is not going to want to walk. If he gets the impression your focusing on that , he wont do it. Let it go. He will eventually walk on his time.

Leave him be he will do it when he is ready, and that goes for every new milestone he reaches. I know it is exciting when they do something new for the first time, but dont be so eager for him to grow up. It will happen, and sooner then you think. ; )

You don't have anything to worry about. My daughter didn't walk until three days before her 1st birthday and boys tend to do things slower than girls. I think that's because girls want to grow up so fast. Anyway, my daughter is now 13 and a straight A student. Your son will walk when he is ready. As a matter of fact, you'll probably look up one day and there he'll be, walking across the floor like he's done it a thousand times. Good luck!

My oldest did not walk till she was 14 months. She liked what she saw when she crawled around. In fact she crawled so much that we got her some baby knee pads. My youngest however never crawled and started walking at 9 months and climbed everything imaginable. Don't worry, your child is fine! Kids develop at their own pace! One thing you may want to try is getting him a toy like a car,lawnmower or popcorn popper that have the long push handles. Sometimes this helps kids who want to stand and try walking but are a bit apprehensive unless they have something to grab and keep their attention. Best of luck!

I'm sure you're tired of hearing it, but he really will only walk when he wants to...when he feels confident in his ability. It's a scary step for little ones. 11 months is early and you have no reason to worry. I have 3 kids and they all walked at different ages. Look at it this way - if he is not walking at his first birthday party it is much easier for you to keep an eye on him and have him where you want him! Enjoy him - thay grow SO fast. My oldest is 15 and my youngest is 19 months and it feels like yesterday that my teen was a toddler!

LOL....... Dont worry mom !!!!! one day when you least expect it he's going to walk to you.....my daughter walked at 12 months...maybe you are trying too hard to MAKE him walk...........If hes 15 months old and not walking i might get a little nervous and ask for the pediatricians advice but 11 months old..i wouldnt worry.....I think he will surprise you one day ......good luck

I did that with my daughter too, and she had absolutely no interest in walking until the day after she turned one. Every child is different, don't rush him. I heard of another child once who didn't walk until 22 months!

My daughter was 2yrs 3mos before she started walking. She had touch sensitivity issues as well as other gross motor development issues. But since we kept regular pediatric appt.'s and saw any specialists that they reccomended , she is now 5 yrs old and not noticeably different from other kindergarteners. So even if there is a delay, as long as you have a pediatrician you feel you can trust, they'll direct you down the right path.

I wouldn't worry my daughter was walking along things starting at the age of 7 months and I thouht for sure she would walk early. Boy was I wrong. She loved walking while holding my or my husband hand all the time, but did not walk on her own until she was 14 months and I went back to work. Needless to say I was not even there and it was at daycare with other kids around her that were walking. I would say peer pressure, they all walk at different times.

my son is 18 months and is just starting to walk on his own. don't worry, he'll get there in his own time. kids all develop at their own rates. my son has done some things extremely early, like rolling over at 3 days, and others extremely late, like walking. also, my son is a thin guy, and i've read that babies with thin legs tend to walk later. but, definitely keep your son's doc informed. good luck!

Jessica, it's okay that he's not ready. They all move toward the next stage at their own pace. Does he crawl around? Is he willing to do that? Because if he is, I wouldn't worry about it. When I had my first child (he'll be 18 next month) he could NOT walk by his first b'day, but my goodness did he begin to tear through the house not long after! Take my advice, don't be in such a rush to have him up and running (or walking, as it were)... once he's there... he'll be getting into EVERYTHING! :-)

I am a pediatric nurse and a mom of three little girls. All of whom walked at different ages. My best advice would be to stop trying. He will walk when he's ready and his muscles are developed enough to hold his body weight. Generally anywhere from 10-15 months is normal for an infant to start taking their own steps. I would also like to say.....enjoy it now while he's not as mobile! :) It only makes life more interesting once they pass that milestone. Just sit back and enjoy :)
