I have been using equal parts washing soda, baking soda and oxyclean (or some type of "oxy" cleaner). This is the easiest recipe I've found as it requires not a lot of mixing up with water and you don't have to grate a bar of soap.
I particularly like this blog, which also mentions that home-made liquid detergents lose power over time: http://littlehouseinthesuburbs.com/2012/... However, she does grate a bar of soap for her detergent recipes.

I just started making my own laundry soap about a year ago an love it! 1/2 cup Borax, 1/2 cup Arm & Hammer Washing Soda, and 1 soap bar grated into small flakes. We use 2 tablespoons per load and it lasts a long time. We have been using the Felsnaptha soap bar in the laundry aisle at Walmart for 99cents but you can get any bar of soap- can be plain, free of dyes and perfumes and then add 1 drop or two of essential oil (your pick fragrance) to scent your load. It's easy to make and saves a lot if money for us.
