A water party is a great 4 year old birthday party idea... buy a slip and slide and maybe a lil pool and do water balloons you can also do necklaces made from frozen koolaid. Take a ice trays and cut straws to length of the slot place them long ways in the slot and poor koolaid in them and let freeze place them on string when frozen and you have a cool desert for the kids to eat while they are hott!

Don't have the party go for more than 3 hours, that's plenty at that age and you will have had enough. If you don't have water restrictions, water play in the yard is good, just make sure the parents know so the kids have suitable clothes. Why not get a lot of cheap water pistols so the kids can squirt each other, aim at targets etc. Children this age like all the traditional party games like pass the parcel, musical chairs, pin the tail on the donkey etc. Try to get some other adults in to help so you can enjoy it more yourself. One thing I always did near the end of the party as a quiet activity to calm the kids down before going home was to make sure that the birthday presents weren't opened until the end. Get the kids to sit in a circle, hold up a gift and announce who it's from then let the children pass it round the circle so they all guess what might be inside and then the birthday child opens it. It's fun and also acknowledges each child's gift rather than ripping off the paper and tossing it in a heap at the start of the party. Good luck with 4 year old birthday party ideas!

I love that age because they still love things like pin the tail on the donkey, and musical chairs.
If it is hot a great 4 year old birthday party idea is asking the kids to bring their bathing suits and have a water party, sprinkler, slip and slide, pool or all of the above in the back yeard!!!

I had an art party for when my daughter turned 4, it was a blast, I asked everyone to bring a plain white t.shirt and we designed them, we painted plant pots, mugs and had a big easel to paint pictures I just set up different stations and had moms help on each one, the kids had so much fun!
