My 6 year old son was just diagnosed with ADHD, his doctor is also suspicious of bipolar. His symptoms seem to be the following: resistance to pain, like with a spanking, gets angry easily over simple things in a split moment. Do I need to have him further evaluated for bipolar?

I have 2 sons that have just been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. They are ages 6 and 7. They both also have ADHD. THey also have other developental disorders and one has a learning disablility.
Having them evaluated and diagnosed was a very good decision for me. You can't get them on meds until they know what to medicate them for. Another thing to think about is that if your son has ADHD they will probably want give him a stimulant to treat it. But if he is bi-polar then he wont be able to take those meds. They will send him straight into a manic meltdown. In fact that sometimes helps them along with the bi-polar diagnosis. I know it did with my boys. There are meds that he can take for bipolar disorder that will also help with the ADHD. My boys are trying a few new bipolar meds and they seem to be helping so far.
Anyway, my advice is to definitely get him evaluated so that you can get him whatever help he may need as soon as possible. The earlier they can start to help him, the better chance he will have at a normal life. God bless you. My email is picture-it@charter.net if you would like to keep in touch. Shirley

I have been bi-polar for years - since I was extremely young. I have a major problem with controlling my emotions. That is part of the disease. Your emotins are taken to the extreme. I have actually thrown my car keys at a door to a business because they closed before I could make it there. I have went off on people at places because they could not do something I was asking them to do. I am a shy and meek individual but when something happens that upsets me it is like I am a completely different person.

Yes absolutely. The symptoms you just described do not point towards ADHD. You should definitely get him further evaluated.

What do they do in evaluating for bipolar?

He is showing characteristics that my friend's son has shown for many years and he was diagnosed with ADHD and bipolar. ADHD doesn't have the resistance/anger but bipolar does. I have soft bipolar myself and can get angry very easily. I would get him evaluated if I were his mother.
