My son had his first febrile seizure last March. He was 13 mo. old and his fever only got as high as 102.8. well let me say that night was my worst night mare lived out. his seizure was a complex febrile seizure that lasted over 20 min. before the ambulance could give hime valume. the valume in turn caused his whole body to shut down. which in turn caused him to stop breathing. By the time we reached the Hospital they had to call a code and were baging him. how ever when they checked his blood sugar the highest they got was 238 and he had 4+ glucose in his urine. I want to know how common this is. my fear is that he might possibly be diabetic and they just have not found it yet. diabetes runs through my family, and I was gestational diabetic with both of my pregnancies. so long story short, how many kids really have spikes in their blood sugars from a seizure, and if they do how high did it actually get.?

sorry stephanie I have not checked this in a while..... my biggest fear was the seizures in the night also.... we have not had any more issues that I know of with the blood sugar, but our Doctor did not do all that yours is, thats good to know they are being proactive, I wish ours did more.. I think Brendan may have had another seizure this winter but it was only for a few sec.... not as traumatic. we were told to watch them and if they last longer then seven min to give him diastat and call 911. how is your little guy doing? the neurologist we followed up with told us if they have 2 or more seizure with out fever they diagnosis them with epilepsy. so hopefully they will grow out of all this mess. the entire thing has been a big eye opener, I had no idea anything like this could happenuntil it happened to my family.

Hi Laura! How is your son? Find anything out with his sugar? How did your son recover? Is everything ok, did he have any problems as a result of his horrible experience? Our doc says everything looks good with my sons sugar, we were checking it everyday, but now we only have to check it when he's not feeling well or if he has another seizure! Hope all is well!

Hi Laura! My son just was sent home from the hospital. He is 19 months old and had his first febrile seizure. His temp was 103.7, he also had a complex febrile. His probably lasted about 30 mins (to our best guess). They finally stopped it with Atavan (not sure of that spelling) I was not immediately aware but found out on lifeflight that his glucose spiked to 317! After we got to the other hospital he then dropped to a 35, 37, and then a 55 within 2 days. They are calling it a febrile seizure but checked his blood glucose in hospital and now we have to check it once a day at home to make sure its ok. I do know in our case they gave him something at the first hospital with a lot of sugar and not enough sodium in his IV, not sure the name , but that probably caused the spike. They are now only chasing his "low blood glucose". Has your son had any more seizures? I'm a little nervous because my father has epilepsy, so thats in the back of my head! And of course this whole blood sugar issue. Any pointers on how to sleep at night? I fear this will happen again, but while we are sleeping, and if it doesn't stop on its own?????????????????????? Scared to death. They were actually getting ready to intabate my son also, but while they were getting the equipment ready, he picked up breathing on his own, that was a little weird!

Hi!

I´m busy researching this, as it is an interesting point you raise! I would however have your son checked - it could very well be diabetic seizure that he had. Will let you know what I find :)
