My daughter has had 2 febrile seizures, but they were both at the onset of low grade fevers- neither above 101.5. She's 8 months old. How often do you use tylenol "just in case?"

I have JUST read about that on my little research mission! I would split them up. They really don´t have to be exactly x number of weeks apart, as long as they are at LEAST x number of weeks apart. eg: measles jab at 6 weeks, and then at LEAST 4 weeks later. [It can be had 12 weeks later....as long as at least 4 weeks have passed] - not correct injection schedule, but you get what I mean. I know this because my youngest was in hospital when it was time for his 6 week jabs, and the paed told me to wait till he was 10 weeks old at least - so he would be 100% better. It is a minimum time period between jabs, and it keeps everyone on a neat schedule :P But yes, with regards to MMr [is it?], definitely split it up - considering the predisposition to seizures.
If she isn´t 100% over the ear infection by the way, WAIT. Rather get her shots later than when she is still a bit ill - as that will definitely cause problems! My friend is so scared of the MMR her son [nearly 4] hasn´t had it yet - and this is just cause she is worried about him possibly developing Autism, he doesn´t get convulsions.
Is there any way to check if she is over it? Perhaps blood tests to check for anti-bodies? That way they can see if there is even a mild infection - and perhaps treat it accordingly? The frightening thing is, we ALWAYS start out with the stupid generic anti-biotic. And by generic, I mean the one that kills all kinds of bugs, not a specific one. The specific ones are what is needed with kiddies like ours!!
Good luck!

I completely agree!!! I definitely feel better talking to others that have been through it. We are just finishing our third round of antibiotics with the last ear infection and I am still wondering if she is over it. Now I am stressing out about her 12 month shots. They said they will split them all up for us and we will just have one every week but I am afraid of making the wrong decision.

Ya this is the thing. I have ended up feeling as if I have honestly gone right over the very scary edge! I spend hours [no, days], panicking, living in fear...cos Matti is slightly warm, and he is acting strangely. Is it ear infection? Is he getting sick? When he wants to sleep in the day [he is 3, and has NEVER done this unless he is about to convulse or very sick], my heart and stomach drop right to my toes. I feel sick to the core. Silly, I know, but this thing has gripped me!! We tried the whole anti-biotics at first sign of cough before - he just ended up having to have a super-size dose of ¨big person¨ anti-biotics 2 weeks later :(
It´s awful to know other people also have to go through this, but makes me feel slightly better cos I´m not alone! [perhaps alone in my irrational and wild fear and panic haha]

We use it a lot!! My daughter is almost one year old and she had her first seizure at almost 9 months. Everytime she acts slightly not 100% (it is hard to gauge this sometimes) her doctor see her right away and we usually start pre-treating with antibiotics if she sees anything out of the ordinary and we start regular four hour doses of Motrin (you have to be a certain age to have that though) to hopefully avoid a seizure. We also keep suppository valium capsules on hand at every place that she visits regularly just in case of the onset of a seizure. The first month after Bella had her first seizure we found ourselves dosing her with a fever reducer anytime she felt slightly warm but we have finally started to back off.

I agree, It is too hard to watch your child go through that. Now whenever we think she is getting an ear infection or even slighlty act different our doctor lets us bring her in and they get us right in with NO WAITING. It is really nice but even though I am learning how common this can be I hate living paranoid all the time. Especially with summer coming up I worry about her body temp in general not even surrounding a fever. But we do feel better whenever she catches something we have started the "Pre-treating" process that you are talking about Catherine and it really puts you at ease.

My son has had 3 ¨sets¨ of convulsions since he was 18months old. [He is now 3]. Almost every time he gets a cold, he has one. We were told to use aggressive temperature control methods. ie: voltaren suppository, 4hrs later lowtem syrup, 4 hrs later empaped supp, 4 hrs later ponstan etc. Our paed has recently said that we can give him valium [baby dose clearly] if he gets temperatures, and while he will spike, he won´t convulse. This is ¨experimental¨, but he says he has had good results. I can´t take watching my child like that, so am willing to give it a bash!

honestly we just had our first febrile seizure this last month at 9 months old. We were being sent home from a doctors office with a fever of 101 and they said nothing was wrong. She started siezing as we were leaving. We are so paranoid that the first week we used it any time she had a 99 and if it didn't go down really quickly we gave her motrin as well. (that was reccomended by our doctor) However it has been a month today and we still take her temperature almost everyday.

My 17 month old daughter had her first set of seizures about a month ago. We had taken to her the children's hospital with a fever of 39.5 C - she had had it for over 24 hours and they sent us home saying that it was most likely a viral infection. About 6 hours later her fever spiked to 42 C and she seized. She was rushed to the children's hospital again and we sat for 8 hours waiting to be seen and again, were told that these things happen; she is most likely getting a viral infection. Over the next 24 hours, we kept giving her motrin every 4 hours (tylenol did nothing to bring down the fever) and she was still not any better. My husband said that we should take her to urgent care center, which we did and found out that she had a bladder infection!! It was very scary - and a horrible thing to have to watch your baby go through. Our doctor that finally diagnosed my daughter said that studies have been done and it doesn't matter whether the kids were given tylenol or not; they still had the seizures. Hopefully your daughter doesn't have any more!!

My 22 month old son just had his first seizure a few days ago. It's so scary. I can't believe how common it is and that I didn't know much about it. He seized at 38.5 C (about 101 F). From everything I've read and people I've talked to the seizure often occurs within the first day or 2 of being sick and is hard to catch because many times you don't even know they're sick yet. Also no one has had more than 1 siezure in a period of sickness so that might help ease your mind a bit. The long & short of this is that once the seizure occurs, there's a slim to none chance that they will seize again so you don't have to worry too much about using the Tylenol. That being said I am still giving it to my son every 6-8 hrs until his antibiotics kick in. Good luck and I hope your daughter stays healthy.
