I am also new to this. I have a 4 year old who has just got hearing aids. She is less than thrilled. I thought she was just going to need tubes, turns out I was wrong. She had 1 ear infection and it preforated her eardrums. Ever since then she's had a hard time hearing. The doctors said she has nerve damage and has moderate hearing loss.

My daughter recieved her hearing aids at age 4 also.....she did great, she left them all the time b/c she could finally hear us. She had a severe to profound loss in her left ear and a profound loss in her right ear. There was no cause for her hearing loss....the doctors told us it was genetic. However, after a few months we noticed that her speech wasn't improving and that she didn't always respond to us. In May of 2009 she was bilaterally implanted with cochlear implants. Our audiologist told us to not allow her to take them off, to make it a part of the routine. We explained it by using a comparision. I wear glasses so she would see me put my "eyes" on so I could see, so she had to put her "ears" on to hear. We even call her CI's her ears.

Thank you for your advice. She's had them for 2 weeks now and is doing alot better. I have found out that giving her small breaks work very well. thanks again.

it will help when she figures out that they are helping her... might want o talk to your audiologist about how you can tell when she gets over stimulated, 2 of my 5 children have hearing loss my, when we first got the aids my 4 yr (severe to profoundly deaf)could only tolerate the sounds for a 4 of hours at a time. where with my 1yr old(profoundly deaf), she can only tolerate the aids for about 1-2hrs at a time. 4yr got aids at 3 1/2 months 1yr got them at abou 5 1/2 months. I can tell you that my 4yr now ask for her ears as soon as she wakes up. but we did have times where she would take them off and hand them to me, I would put them back in 1 time, If she took them off again and handed them to me I would leave them off for about an hour then put them back on(this done because when I would force her to keep wearing them she would "go play" take them out and hide them(age 3 when she did this) try using quite as possible settings when she has them in at first so that she can get aclimated to the noises that she has not been hearing. hope this helps a little.
