My son(6 yrs old) is an only child and no real neighborhood friends. I'm a single working mother and have no real network of other mothers. I don't want to enroll my son in daycare (My mom watches him now) Any ideas on how to arrange/make playdates so he's not bored this summer?

Go to your local library on a Saturday for a story time. It's a great way to meet some other moms and hopefully make a friend or two for your son.

Play groups are great. I too have an only child and we belonged to 3 different play groups when she was little. One I found through the local church/school, it was free. Second was through play gym in town, that I had to pay for. And lastly we joined our local community center and signed up for swimming classes and they offered a play group. It was the best time for us both. I also got to meet new people who had children the same age as mine. But just to let you know as your child gets to know kids in his school he will make friends and you can invite them over on the weekends when your home.
