I am the mother of a 2 year old girl- who will be an only child.

I was trying to find movies and tv shows for her with positive female characters that were not princesses. I didn't find a good list- so I started my own. If you have concerns about the role models your daughter sees in the media, you might like my blog. The link is below. So far I have 10 entries but plans for many more.

If you have any suggestions of movies or tv shows for me to review, let me know!

The only one I can think to add would be Nancy Drew. I loved her when I was growing up! Anne Shirley from Anne of Green Gables is definitely my all time fave but the Little House on the Prarie series is a classic as well.

Veggie Tales. Its Veggies that teach Godly things, but not too pushy on the religion thing. Its for boys and girls. All others I was going to say are covered!

The immediate ones that came to my mind were Olivia (I love love love her...I find myself singing the song all the time) and Spirited Away. You have both on there. Yay!!! Also, I love that Widget (from Wow Wow Wubbzy) is female. I have a 2 yr old son and I agree with the above poster that boys need to be exposed to strong female role models as well. I also love the movie "A Little Princess" circa 1995. This is my favorite version of the story and I love the young actress who portrays the lead, but there is also the much earlier version with Shirley Temple circa 1939 called "The Little Princess". Both are really good. See both. :) Also...the female characters in the Chronicles of Narnia are pretty strong and positive. If I think of any more, I'll definately pass them along. Well done. :)

Max and Ruby & while their hard to find The Little people series (by fisher price). My daughter loves Angelina but I cannot stand her whiny voice however she does always solve her problems in the end. Curious George is not bad either as it has a few female characters that are not typical. Betsy & Mrs. Rinken.

I agree! I think that all of the positive movies for girls are also good for boys. They need to see girls in great roles, also they need to see boys in non-traditional roles.

i think that Dora the Explorer is a strong role model for young children. Along with her there is also Kai Lan(Ni Hao, KaiLan), Darby (My friends Tigger and Pooh), Annie & June (Little Einsteins), Alisia (Go, Diego, Go), Ruby (Max & Ruby), Kiki & Marina (Fresh Beat Band), Minnie & Daisy (Mickey Mouse Clubhouse), Linny & Ming Ming (Wonder Pets), Tasha & Uniqua (Backyardigans), Widget (Wow Wow Wubbzy), Olivia (Olivia).

Just to name a few. :)

I have a 2 year old son and I think it's important that he knows that there is more to girls than just pretty dresses and that girls can do anything boys can do. His favorite show is Dora.

May I suggest Anne of Green Gables. Growing up and even now, it's one of my favorites. It was a book first (there's a whole Anne series) and there are movies as well.
