Firstly, you have to be consistent with your child in potty training. My son was potty trained at 19mos. The first thing I did in the morning with my son was place him on the toilet. I use to buy pull-ups, but those became too expensive, so early potty training was the better option for me. Anytime he drank liquids, I placed him on the toilet. I even placed a small amount of cheerios in the toilet for "target training." Before I realized it, he loved doing #1. As for #2, that was a diffent story. I noticed my son would pass gas alot. This was my potty time sign. Also he would not be as active, like running around the house and he would get very quite. This was another sign that he needed to placed on the toilet. Before I knew it he was doing #2. I let him flush the toilet to see it go "bye-bye", before I knew it he was using the bathroom all by himself. In my experience, the actual toilet worked better than a potty chair. My hubby and I used one of those kids' toilet seat covers with the addition of a step stool.

I'm not really very proactive when it comes to potty training, however I bought my daughter a potty chair as soon as she was able to walk, when she was 10 months old. She is now 19 months old, and will sit on her potty chair fully clothed every time I go to the bathroom. The only time I actually try and get her to go potty is before bath time, and if after I take off her diaper she gets up and heads towards the bathroom. She doesn't always go, but she does know what the chair is for.
