Hi Moms! I have a 4 year old who refuses to take any medication when she is sick. I have tried bribes, threats, the whole 9 yards and nothing phases her. Does anyone have any suggestions? And, I can't just make her take it-she is too darn strong for this ol mom to hold down!

I've tried that and my son used to refuse to drink the juice because he could smell what was in it. WalMart sells the flavors for the medicine. U have to look for it or ask the pharmicist for it.

Talk to the pharmacist and ask them to put their favorite flavor in the medicine. Whenever my son gets an ear infection, i let him pick out his own flavor for his antibotic. They can flavor up the over the counter stuff if u ask!

IF IT'S LIQUID TRY PUTTING IT IN HER JUICE( DON'T LET HER SEE IT) OR IF ITS A TABLET, CRUSH IT UP IN HER FAVORITE KIND OF PUDDING, YOGURT, JELLO OR APPLE SAUCE. THAT SHOULD WORK. GOOD LUCK

I can hold her down and shove liquid into her mouth but even if she swallowed it she cries to the point of vomiting it all back up again.I have a mini mortar an pestle and have ground up vitamin tabs ans mixed with her fave cordial drinks. We try those sweet slightly fizzy like Lucosade drinks the ones you have when you are sick to hide the liquid panadol or anti histamine medicine. These some times work and some times not.I just wish they made a medicine that didnt taste so awful..if I can tase it so can she

When I was a child my parents and aunts would hold us down when giving medications, with no success.I vowed not to do that with my child because I remember the fears I had.

Our son was 5 months when he first had to take medication(due to asthma). We used a syringe and made it sound like it was the tastiest thing. Before he turned 1 we started using the tiny measuring cups that came with some medications. And again we made it sound like it was the tastiest thing on earth. At times we would have to take a small sip to show him that he would be ok and that we loved the taste. When he would drink the medicine we made a big deal about it.We gave him lots of hugs, kisses, and hoorays. He is now 3.5 and he only takes the chewable multi-vitamins and we still give him lots of praises when he takes it every morning even if he does not refuse.

I'm sorry I have no suggestions/solutions. Our son is 9 and is still anti-medicine. He doesn't physically fight it like he did when he was young he just flat refuses to take it. He will occasionally take a Motrin for a headache and he will take it for fever as he knows his only options are take it at home or go to the ER and have them force it on him. We don't mess with fevers as my husband almost died from one when he was little and Sean knows about that. Any medicine that is liquid is absolutely out in his book which means he won't take any form of cough syrup. I honestly think this is something inborn because my father was also anti-medicine. If anyone finds a good solution, please let me know because this can be downright annoying.

Depends on the medication but if it's something like tylenol for fever I'd go for the suppository. My son knows he either takes it by mouth or I give it to him in the bum. He usually takes it! But again, you may have to hold her down. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist. If it's something of a comfort measure, like taking tylenol for a sore throat I wouldn't even fight over it. Explain the benefits of taking it ( in 4 year old speak ) and if she refuses, her throat will hurt. Make sure you leave the choice with her, so when she's ready for it all she has to do is ask.

Yep the syringe works sometimes I had to blow in her mouth after shooting it in because that would make her have to swallow it!  I know it sounds harsh but if they choke a little on it, it really isn't hurting them they will soon get the idea they have to take it, believe it or not that is how they sometimes handle it in the hospitals! I have even had to sit on my daughter before and pin her arms down and do it and after that one time, she was willing to just take it, I think the thought of being held down was scarier than taking the medicine!  It was really hard to do it, it made me cry and I was so shook up but she really got the message of how important it was and never had a problem again!

If it's a liquid I used to use a syringe to shoot it in along the side of our daughters mouth.

I had one like that. Depending on the meds, we did the mash it up in yogurt trick and that seemed to work. Now she gets it that it will help her feel better and it's better to get it over with than waste energy on rebelling against the cure. I don't bother w/the non-essential meds, it's not worth the struggle.
