I too have had problems receiving SSI for my daughter. It seemed like the fight for my life!!!!! I went through the grueling process, I hated the way they treated my daughter & I as if we were lepers. She received it for about 2yrs max and then they cut her off!!! Saying they overpaid just because I had a lil overtime on a couple of checks! I was bewildered. Im a SINGLE mom. So what if I put in a few extra hours to provide for us. At the time I just did not have the strength to go through the humiliation with them all over again. I hated the way their psychologist talked to my daughter when he was testing her. It took everything in me for me to not jump across the table and punch him! Clearly this is money these kids deserve!!!! She'll be 18 in March..I'm going to get a lawyer. I'm never giving up and neither should you!

I have Applied for my Son he has ADD who is 10 now since 2010 the first App. i let go and never appealed the decision then i applied in 2011 again and they denied him again and i appealed the decision and they looked over his case again and denied him again a week after they told me to send them copies of information they needed they didnt even give me a chance to fax them any of his records from school not to mention they listed a wrong school to get records from, a school that i havent even heard of where i live so i appealed that decision i am on the 3rd step now and still nothing and they say SSI is for low income families i find that hard to believe because i know of people who have two and three kids that get SSI and i have witnessed first hand that there diagnosis is mild my son has been struggling since he started school i even had to hold him back a yr. because i refused to let him struggle in the next grade when he wasnt even passing. He has been on medication for two yrs already and it helps him to an extent but has its side effects and with SSI i would be able to get him tutoring that he needs. I am not working and his dad isnt in the picture and i have 4 kids and living with my mom so SSI is not for people struggling that really need it its for people who do not need it who use the money for their own self and not on their kid who needs it!!!!

My son is 9, almost 10. He has Autism and ADHD among other things. He finally got approved for SSI this year because his issues caught up with his school work. As reading and other subjects in school became less fact based and more creative or reasoning based he began to show a lot of problems. It was actually his school teachers statements that swayed the judge in our favor. SSI never asked for statements from his teachers, but at my request his lawyers did. All of the medical evidence in the world wasn't going to help my son because his disability is mental not obviously physical like blindness, etc.

You don't need to cash out 401k, but you may need to sell an extra vehicle (they allow 1 per adult) and cash in life insurance down to below $2000 asset value total per person. My daughter is on SSI and we have to fight it every month. It's a pain, but we need it. If you need, get a lawyer (there are free ones for this). Track every doctor's appointment, keep records in a binder at home if need be (we have to); it also helps verify disability and track things for applying.

I have applied for ssi 4x and got denied 3x. Right now they are in the processes of verifying my sons disability. Yes they go by income ratio not their problem if you can not pay your rent on unemployment and feed your kids. Just keep fighting and be honest, just because you got a car or some life insurance or 401k they think that you can live by selling your car cash out the life insurance and 401k then they will help you. It saddens me that the system is strict on the ones who do need it the most but yet some who don't get it.

I have a child with cancer and do you know they sent me $ 86.00 for 5 months, then i received a letter in the mail informing me that we now owe them $ 587.00.My son should be able to receive a check for the rest of his life. Then had the nurve to inform me if my son was admitted for any reason into the hospital he wouls only receive $ 30.00 a month in stead of the $ 86.00,Before they told us we owed them. This is a crying shame.I know some people who draw a bnig amount on SSI and there's nothing wrong with them. Why are they so unfair....
