Would welcome any advice from other families doing Auditory Verbal therapy with CI kids? Stuck in the middle of two opposite theories to teach her language, AV therapy or Total Comunication....too much details to write here, but would love to find anyone in our situation.
Thanks

Yep, we heard/believed that if the parents were committed it would surely work for entirely too long. We stuck with AV for my son although there were clear difficulties both at home and in session but the therapist was so keen on no manual system whatsoever that in my opinion we let it go too long and it was to our child's detriment. Not all kids benefit from AV. If it worked for your children, great, but we had some other issues that affected its effectiveness, including hyperactivity. But as the therapist had a never-say-die attitude, we kept at it past the point where it was making any gains--more than 2 years during a crucial speech developmenet phase. So sorry I did not include cued speech with the AV but I was determined to stick to the program.

I raised both of my daughters with CIs and AVT. They are now 23 and 15, and I think the most important testimony to the choices we made for them early on is that today they tell us how grateful they are. AVT has enabled them to function fully in the hearing world with minimal to no accommodations. Take a look at the video at http://cochlearimplantonline.com/site/?p... , my older daughter's website, to hear a large group of kids raised with AV thanking their Cert. AVT. There are a few kids for whom AVT isn't the right choice, but they are few and far between when the therapist is good and the parents are motivated and willing to put in the time and effort that AVT takes in the early years.
