My 10 year old daughter has multilple disabilities, she functions at about a 3-5year old level... (mostly 3!) She has been dx. with conductive hearing loss and given hearing aids about 2 weeks ago. She doesn't like to leave them in, and threw one in the trash this morning at daycare!! These cost $4800 apiece! It was found after nearly a four hour search by the staff. Anyone dealt with this and have any suggestions?? Thanks so much for your time.

I have a son who was born a hearing child and then one day around 8 months he stopped responding and we took him to see an audiologist and he was moderatly deaf. He got hearing aids and he loved them. I won't say that they are not hard to keep up with and we did not lose them all the time but it was worth it. Then as time went on his hearing was getting worse and now at age 2 he is completly deaf. He has the cochlear implants now ans he does great with it

My son is 6 and has had problems with his ears since birth. He has surgery after surgery on his ear. In 08 they fitted him with a digital hearing aid for his right ear, and I broke him on by having him wear it for 2 hours a day for the first week, then bumped it up an hour a day until he was used to wearing it for a max of 7 hrs a day. They also make these special little clips you can attach to the hearing aid that in case the they pull it out it is still attached to their shirt. I would also have the audiologist check to make sure the sound level is correct and it isn't to high because if it is it will cause a lot of feedback and make it very unbearable for them to wear it. Also have them check to make sure the ear mold is proper if it is to big it will hurt them it if it is to small it will also bother there ears. Also sometimes insurance companies don't like it but we had to have a new mold every six months because there ears change so much in size. I wish you all the luck. I hope her hearing aids work for her. I know with my son the next step will be the implants because his hearing aid will no longer work for him they told me last month that he is 100 precent deaf in his right ear because of all the damange.

Check with the Lions' Club. They have a loaner program and other services to help the hearing impaired. We were able to benefit from this when our daughter was being evaluated for an implant. Good luck!

My son didn't need hearing aids, his hearing loss was caused by structural deformity of his ear canals and was repaired when he was 2. They have a cousin that does this though, and I also cared for elderly people with the same issue. Some complained that all the noise just hurt. Perhaps ask her what the problem is with them (does it hurt to hear? Are they making her ears sore?) and see if she's willing to wear them for shorter periods of time when hearing is most important, then having the option of taking them out during other periods of the day.
