Audio Processing Disorder

I have 2 step children, ages 6 and 4, who have been diagnosed with audio processing disorders. Has anyone else had to go through this? The way it has been explained to me sounds pretty typical with their ages, having hard times listening, and following directions. The oldest also has speech issues, which he sees a speech therapist for. I guess what I am wondering is how long this will last, and any secrets to how you got through it. Most of the time I feel as if I am talking to a couple of walls :) Thanks ahead of time for any input!

Thanks for the info ladies! I will definately look into an audiologist, they were diagnosed by school psychologists and speech therapists. Already had problems with classroom environments, and the oldest has problems with writing. I just pray that it is something that they can overcome!

Kathryn, Who recommended? If it is significant enough to be affecting your son, you may want to pursue an audiology assessment by, what I would call, and educational audiologist. Not different necessarily in training from a medical audiologist, but the difference is that this person would understand educational therapies and the educational model... An FM system is an accommodation, bringing the sound closer to the ear, not remediation (fixing the problem), which is what I would be focusing on. FM systems can help in the sense that its a stronger auditory signal so they child may better be able to process the information (instructions by the teacher, etc...). Some auditory processing difficulties worsen where there is a lot of ambient noise (like a classroom). There are many different types of auditory processing issues - you could have 2 children in the same family with different processing issues and needing different therapies... You have to get to the bottom of what your son's specific needs are....

My son was diagnosed w/ this and they recomended an FM transmitor, but I really don't think it helped much.

Diagnosed by an audiologist? There are therapies out there for auditory processing disorders. If an audiologist diagnosed, did (s)he make any recommendations for therapies? There could be therapies that they could receive; also the audiologist could give strategies to you to help you in helping them. I strongly recommend that you research their issues so that you have a greater understanding of how it affects them. These difficulties can affect children's education, as you can imagine. It can also be a basis for a learning disability, so you should really watch for difficulties with reading and writing as they get into school.
