Reagan's genetisist said that I should teach Reagan baby sign language. I don't know anything about this! Is there anywhere to get good info to learn how to do this? Does anyone else do this?

Just so you know, there are different types of sign language. The sign language in the UK is different from American sign language. I am American and my husband is English. My daughter is deaf. We live in the US. Here the most common form of sign language is ASL or American Sign Language. This one is also the easiest to teach to babies and small children. S.E.E.(Signed Exact English) is not commonly used and more difficult for small children because you sign every word. ASL sort of short cuts out some words. There are some signs that are the same between the UK and the US but enough differences that it could become confusing. Also there are slight differences in different areas of the country that are similar to local slang. A few places that helped us when my daughter was smaller was Galladet University and The Alexander Graham Bell Association. Contact them and they can point you in the right direction. Also find out if your area has a hard of hearing and deaf services. They could point you in the right direction locally. Deaf schools, if you have one in your area, often offer sign language classes. You can also sometimes take a course at a local college. Also this website looks like it offers a lot of info but you have to dig through it a bit. http://www.babies-and-sign-language.com/ Hope it helps.

I think that all children regardless of health or disabilities should learn Sign Language! I have been signing since I was 4 as I have an Aunt that is deaf. When I became a mother, even though we dont see my Aunt that often, we taught my boys to sign.. then, when my daughter was born, we began teaching her signs and then noticed that she wasnt able to communicate verbally with us! It was SO much easier to already have her know the signs and be able to communicate and feel a little independant and not frustrated. There are all kinds of books on it, talk to your local community college, they might offer Signing classes. Kids can learn at any age to sign and many, like my children have been signing from birth. Luckily, I already knew ASL so teaching my children and husband was fairly easy! Kids can learn this so easily and they are good at repeating signs you do! Not only is it good for communication, if they can continue using ASL through out life they can get good jobs working with the deaf community or as a translator. I have done both and LOVE it! It opens your options up as well. Once you learn the basic signs, many follow that.. Male signs are to upper half of the head, female on the lower half. First signs to teach are Mom, Dad, Drink, Milk, potty, water, no, yes.... from there, once you see the signs it'll come naturally. Now, my only problem is finger spelling.... LOL but that's because I have arthritis in my right hand LOL Good luck with it... and let us know how he's doing.

Hi, Makaton is a fab and easy sign language to learn and teach.

It was designed for children with learning difficulty but is being used in nurserys all over the UK. I taught this to my son as a way for him to communicate way before he could talk! As a result, he was never frustrated with me, and his vocabulary is at that of a 6/7 year olds (he's 4) Makaton is also used on a tv programme called "Something Special" on BBC. Hope this helps x

Ive know Sign Language since I was 2 1/2 to 3 yrs old.. I still know by this day!! I teach my childern how to use sign language or also called (ASL) all the time!! Its great to know and learn!! I think all Parents shoiuld know it and teach all thier kids to do it, b/c it is useful and fun to do. =)

Also, My son, whoses is 3 yrs old and my daughter whoses 1 1/2 yrs old.. they both know some sign language by now.... like maybe 5 words or so. They both them the basic ones and It didnt toke them long to learn them. They both uses them a lot to.

Um, there is a lot of places you can find them. You should check Book Stores like Barns and Nobles or some other places like that. Also, Your family/ baby doctor should have some sugguestions where to take you child to get the help he or she needs. Thats what my parents did for me. They ask our family doctor and toke me the best place to learn sign language and how to speak, b/c i had speaking problems.. thats why i had to learn it myslef. So check the book stores, onlines - (like google it) or Ask your Doctor to. also, there are some dvds out to about Sign language. I hope that help!

By The Way... IF you need help.. Come and ask me. I know sign lang really well. Im thinking about going back to College for it. So yeah. Ive know it for a long time now. =) You can more gladly add me to your friend list to. Im still trying to figure that out. lol. but talk to u later.

Signing Times (signingtimes.com) are the best DVDs for learning. Don't freak out. There are books all over the place. You start with the basic signs for milk, food, drink, and more. This is a very easy thing to do, and you will never regret it. My daughter knew over 15O before she could verbalize at age 3. I assure you, this is an easy undertaking!

I have taught my children some sign language just because it is a valuable skill. I HIGHLY recommend : Baby Signing Time (it is the Alex and Leah mentioned above). The DVD collection is available for FREE at our library! The instructor is a mother of two children with special needs. The show is very entertaining! They also go on to "grow with the child" in the series: Signing Time (aimed at preK and elementary aged children). We just watched and used the signs in our everyday life!

You can check and see if there is deaf school near you and ask to talk to the pre-school teacher they would help you find something in your area I am sure most baby signs are easy and common sense exp. ball puy your fingers together to form a ball, cookie is taking your fingers in the shape of cookie and turn back in forth in other palm like you are taking a cookie apart, milk take your hand act like you are getting milk from a cow, drink is form a fist with thump up and act like you are drinking a glass of waterthese are a few examples we used when I was a teacher's aide for the ENCSd pre-school. I hope it helps

We have worked on teaching our son sign language for 3 years now. We started with a DVD called My Baby Can Talk- First Signs. We bought ours at Babies R Us but I know you can also find it on Amazon. It was pretty cheap, too! Our son has only learned signs but that is a result of his condition, not the program. Our two year old can do all the signs on the dvd.
