Tricia, you should be able to take days off under the Family Medical Leave Act. It covers appointments for you or your family members who are ill or have a disability. I totally agree that its critical to get this assessment done right away and done with an expert even if it is at some distance from your home.

Hi Jesse. I am new to this circle. I actually just joined tonight. I have a handsome little man who is 8 years old and has been diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder Not Otherwise Specified. He was diagnosed at the age of 4. I can tell you that it has definitely been a roller coaster ride with him. Even now he still cycles quite often every day and at times has rapid or mixed mood swings. It is really hard to keep him stable since he is growing so fast.
Tricia-I also live in PA. In my opinion, If you are able to take the time off of work and get an appt with a specialist I would go for it. I'm not sure where the specialist is but I do know that there is one in Pittsburgh that comes highly recommended. From what I understand he is among the top child psychiatrists that evaluate and treat children with pediatric bipolar disorder.

Hello I am also new to this site. My name is Tricia, I am 40 & I live in Latrobe, PA with my husband & our 2 special needs sons. I am thinking that my youngest one may have been miss diagnosed with several other disorders years ago, but I think he is really Bipolar. I am looking for help to find out. The dr wants us to take him to a specialist about 2 hrs away. The problem with that is getting him to go for one & actually get time off work to take him. The older he gets with out getting the correct diagnosis the worse he gets. I am just at a loss on how to get the right kind of help for him. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Please contact me at: taylor12269@yahoo.com Thanks! ~Tricia~

Hi, Jesse. I just joined this circle tonight and saw your post. I don't know much about this specific 'circle' for moms of special needs children, but I know there are hundreds of thousands of us moms of children who struggle with Bipolar Disorder and other mental illnesses. I actually have 3 kids with Bipolar Disorder. It's certainly been a frustrating roller coaster ride of emotions in our home over the years. How about you?
