Hi Everyone!
My husband and I are contemplating moving to Florida. It seems like it should be an easy decision, but our son who is 7, has special needs. This makes it a lot more difficult! So, we are wondering if any families live in Florida and have good or bad recommendations. We are thinking the Jacksonville area, or Tampa/Sarasota/Bradenton area. We are in need of a good school district, as well as a Neurologist, Ped. Ophthalmologist, special needs clinic and Pediatrician.

I know this is asking alot, but any information, would be greatly appreciate!!!

Thanks so much!!

Sheri Hoskins both are very nice areas, depending on if you want small town or big city living, if you are in St Augustine you will more than likely have to travel to Jax for medical appts, and St Augustine has more tourism than Jacksonville does, but both have amazing benifits for families, go to apd.myflorida.com this is the sight for the agency for persons with disabilities in florida can give you information there.... also depending on services I can assist you with locating providers.

Well Janele.
My name is Kelly and I happen to live in the Jacksonville Florida area, I know everyone has different oppinions but I can honestly say I have been very lucky in all areas above, heave great doctors, have only had two complaints regarding my sons school, and simply love love love the area.... my son is TMH and the type of disability has alot to do with placement and services. but we have a great childrens clinic and hospital, the clinic is named Nemours and the hospital is Wolfson's. can also look up apd.myflorida.com/area/4 ·that is the area office for persons with disabilities good luck and best wishes to you

I live and grew up in north Florida and am now fortunate enough to work at Shands at UF in Gainesville. I also have a special needs child. Wolfson and Nemours in Jacksonville are great, but the schools in Jax could use some improvement. The most positive thing about the schools is that there are a lot of charter school options. When I was in middle school I went to a school for the arts up there. Gainesville is a nice area with good schools and all the pediatric specialties in one town, but no hospital solely devoted to children. The property taxes are the highest in Florida and it's not as big a town as Jacksonville or Tampa. I can't really speak to Tampa. We often visited my father when he lived there, but I have no intimate knowledge of the area.

I live in Winter Haven, FL and I have to take my daughter to All Children's Hospital in St. Pete and Winnie Palmer in Orlando. I have to go to Shands in Jacksonville because I have cancer. If your going for cancer then Shands is your best place. I had my brain surgey there 21 years ago (officially as of tomorrow) and they are still really good.

I grew up in Venice, which is south of Sarasota, but still in the county. (Sarasota Cty Schools) and later taught special ed there. It's been almost 15 yrs since I was there, but I can tell you that the school system is generally really, really good. There are some areas better than others, so it's important to know in advance where you might be zoned. The economy in that area is really bad though, and you may have difficultly securing employment if you are planning on going there without a job in hand. That particular area has a lot of wealthy retirees (yes, read, OLD PEOPLE) BUT that has created a really good tax base for the schools to receive money from. Check out greatschools.org, it is very helpful. You can contact me if you'd like more information.

I lived in St. Pertersburg (Tampa area) and am currently living in Lake worth, (Palm Beach county). All Childrens Hospital in St. Petersburg is awesome!!! that is where my son had his heart transplant. We go over every three months for check ups, there is also a clinic. I would go on line to their web page and see what they offer.

My e-mail is mdtw4@yahoo.com if you have further questions.

I live in Clearwater, FL. My daughter has special needs and attends a local exceptional school, Paul B Stephens. We see doctors in Gainesville at Shands Hospital and also down here in Saint Petersburg at All Childrens. My email is alli006@yahoo.com if you have any specific questions. We are very happy with our location, originally from Massachusetts. There is a great Conductive Education school that just opened in Sarasota. Do a search in google and check it out.

I am also interested in St. Augustine/Jacksonville area as well. I want to her what others have to say. My kids are on autism spectrum ages 5 and 7. I would most likely home school them.

Im in St Marys Ga ( 5 miles from the Florida border). We take my son to Jacksonville Fl for most of his doctors. Wolfsons childrens Hospital and Nemours are right next to one another and right off I95. Everyone there is Great. The school district however isnt the greatest honestly...Well, most of them. If you live by the beaches, their district is better than the rest of the city. But St Augustine is just below Jax and its (1) a much nicer/safer area and(2) much better schools.
