Hi my name is Liz and my son Connor is also 15 with DS. Have you had any issues at school where his behaviour is quite silly? It is affecting his education and making friends because the school staff is so busy trying to correct his behaviour. Any suggestions?

I was told by a grandmother of a child with CP one time when I said Joey is Downs "he has Downs not is Downs. He has a disability not is a disability" She was so right. I have to watch myself with that. That said I think all of us have been told to expect the very worse. When Joey was 2 weeks a doctor called us to her office 100 miles from our home. We were told she would help us get services started that we needed. That is not what she did. We were advised to put him in a "home". He would never be able to do a thing for himself, talk, feed himself or walk. That doctor needs to go back to school with parents like us as teachers. There are things he can not do that his 17 year old pers do but he does somethings some of them do not do. I live the story about the time a teacher (not his teacher) fussed because I let him follow the other children in play. He had to be a boy before he can be an adult. The other children helped him climb a hill and saw to it he got in line to slide. I stood at the foot of the slide keeping an eye on them. Every one had a great time. It taught him something and the other children too. My sister- in- law met us with our nephew after he spent the night with her. Her son is 2 months older than Joey They were about 18 and 20 months old. Joey was playing giving eskimeo sugar and doing hand motions to song like wheels on the bus and itsy bitsy spider. She got a funny look on her face and said Nick could not do that. It is all in what we teach them and what they like to do that helps them learn. Joey had a friend with DS that was almost 40 when he cought Swine Flue and died. Do not let a doctor get you down telling you how little your child will learn and how long they will live. They do not know. We live by a teaching hospital and I refuse to take Joey there for treatment because they are not taught to treat humans. We are just a body to learn on to "many" of the doctors there. They my try that on me but not on by child.

Hi Lisa,
My son with Downs turned 5 today. We didn't know before he was born, so it was a bit of a surprise, but what joy he brings. There have been moments of anger, pain, sadness, and lots of laughs and joy. David also has Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD), ADHD and Epilepsy, but he has been healthy and always happy. He is in a normal preprimary with his peers despite his significant speech delays due to the CAPD, and all the kids and teachers adore him. He's a special boy who influences everyone he meets. Enjoy the journey!

I know that there are many questions. I started with a group for Moms of mentally disabled children called new beginnings. The next step is the public school. I was fortunated to have my daughter in a skills for living class for about 8 years. The skills our special needs children need to survive are numerous. As a Mother we all have a tendency to pamper and baby our special children. Do so but the teaching should go on continually.

My daughter is 37 and a joy. There is so much available for our special children today. My child is functioning pretty good. She holds a job and lives in a group home with 5 other ladies. My main statement is know that these children are special and it takes much patience. I tried to teach my daughter as many skills for living as possible. Any questions I will be happy to reply

Wow, if any of us felt alone, we certainly don't need to. Just look at how many of us have a child with Down Syndrome! This is the hot topic on Circle of Moms right now.
My son's name is Benjamin and he turned 3 in March. When he was born they took him away right away - I'm still sad at the thought. He was shipped to another hospital to be monitored. After 2 weeks we took him home, but at 8 weeks old his heart failed. We stayed at Sick Kids in Toronto until he was 10 months old (surgery at 9 months saved his little heart). Although that prolonged hospital "visit" caused a ton of health complications, I can honestly say that Ben is an amazing kid. What a fight he has in him! Just today he took 4 steps on his own! But the thing that impresses me most about him, is that despite all that life has thrown at him in his short 3 years, his number one goal is to laugh, and to make those around him laugh. As frustrating as our kids can be, they bring so much joy.

To those of you who live in more rural areas, like I do, with very little resources, you can always make a donation to your local library of books on DS. Our parent support group is planning to do just this and in Oct. we will put those books on display as an exhibit on DS for DS Awareness Month.

I have a twenty year old so with downs. You got support Lisa, any questions, you are not alone!
It was really cool when my son was diagnosed many years ago they didn't have Hippa -health care privacy act, the nurse called the intermediate school district-no releases signed but they came up and shown me a picture of kids with siblings - showing me that kids with siblings and how the child with downs bears some resemblance to others in the family members. BYW I think Hippa is good because it protects families of info getting blabbed all over the place but when there is some really good networking things that need to happen...we now have facebook and circle of moms, etc. Even my immediate family members were... we have a neighbor with downs, there was a girl we grew up with I think it was downs -similiar characteristics.

hahaha, Bobby has a very stubborn streak, i too end up carrying him around when he throws a strop!!!! he still uses his pushchair and he is not a very good walker, and it makes life alot easier. im sure he enjoys the attention, especially when we go out for something to eat, he has to create, and when he is told off he seems to get louder and more stubborn

Thanks for the tips, Our daughter started getting therapy when she was jsut 6 months old, here in MO there is a program called First Steps that is wonderful and you don't have to have insurance or use your insurance, it is fully funded. We also have respite care available so we get a break from the constant care & supervision she needs. We use it for date night. It has done a world of good for the whole family.

Hi, Lisa. I have a set of twins that are 4-years-old. My son has autism. My daughter has Down syndrome. Children with Down's are loving and wonderful kids. If you make sure that he gets regular therapy and get him into a good preschool, he'll be fine. My daughter is a little behind with her potty training, and her speech is still very delayed. However, she loves to dance and sing, she knows her shapes and colors, she can picture read a book, she engages in imaginative play, and she is very social. Just like any other preschooler. Your son will be okay. Just make sure that you get the therapy in place. He will probably be approved for speech, occupational, and physical therapy. Make sure you get the services in place and then monitor the therapists closely. Also, expose him to social situations like the playground, the park, the zoo, the museum, the library, church, etc. I find that my daughter is learning from social interactions as well. Please feel free to chat with me whenever you want to talk. Peace.
