Hello parents with DS children. My son will be starting preschool in December. He is transitioning from a special needs daycare to a main stream preschool. The school district along with his therapist believe he is not only ready for main stream preschool, but mainstream would be the best for him. I am nerveous. He has hit almost every make on his IEP, but I want to make sure mainstreaming is the best for him. Any suggestions on how to prepare him for preschool. My main concern is potty training. He is almost walking and his speech is coming along.

my suggestion is to take him to visit his new school prior to actual enrollment, perhaps at the end of the day so that he can explore the environment and you can make note of any areas that might be concerning to you. perhaps this will be a positive way to him to make initial contact and interaction with the children who are already enrolled as well as the teachers. will he be riding a bus? does he sign or indicate to you when he needs to go potty? at this age there are plenty of children who are still in the learning stages of potty training so i would not worry to much about that. will he still be receiving special services at his new school? what is it that you are most nervous about? what are you most excited for?

MY daughter started school at age 3. She is 6 now and can count to 10 knows colors has came a long way with speech. She still strugles with behavior and has been potty trained since 1st of this year . Its hard and she still has a long way to go but has also came a long way. I had to let kristine potty train at her own speed which seemed like slow but we made it. I had teachers who worked with her on this too at school. You can say her teacher was the one who potty trained her.

Quoting Natasha:

I was told to get my son into preschool as soon as hes old enough. Hes been in daycare you said so he has been around other kids before so i dont think he will have too many problems adjusting. My son is to young still but im in a support group and they say the biggest problems are getting funding for the supports their child needs. But good luck with your little boy.

Thank you, he will transition at 3 sometime in December of 2009, he will go to headstart and at 4 yrs, he will go to preschool
