Has anyone had a child go through cleft palate surgery?

My son had cleft-lip surgery last May and will be having cleft-palate surgery this summer. I would like to know what to expect after the surgery. He is eating regular solid food. What kinds of foods will he eat afterwards? Any recipe ideas? How soon after the surgery will he start saying more words? Right now he only says mama, hi, hey, and uh oh. I understand that every child is different, but I would still like to have an idea on what to expect.

Hi!! My son Maxwell (16 months) had his palate repaired this past Oct. I'm sure every doctor does things differently, but Max had 10 days of liquids only and then 10 days of soft food. For the liquid, we added Pedialite (sp?) to his milk and for the soft foods we did a lot of applesauce and went back to stage 2 baby food. It was rough at first because he was HUNGRY!! He wanted table food so bad! But, we got through it and so will you!! Your mommy instincts will kick right in!! We had to get creative as far as play also, because he had splints on his arms so he didn't put anything in his mouth. We did a lot of music with him. It made him happy to watch us dance and act crazy :) Right now his speech is ok....he says 6 words. Developmentally he is right where he should be so I'm sure more words are coming, we just need to be patient :) Hope this helps!
