Hello and same to you and everyone else. I just joined myself. I am a grandmother of a 14 year old grandson whom was diagnosed with aspergers syndrome and a mild case of autisim, at the age of 8. His name is Tevin. He is doing rather well and believe it or not he is very well disiplined and has taken no medication since he was diagnosed. The Doctors could never seem to get the medication regulated right for him so we just took him off of it completely. Also my son, his father realized that would do things just to see what he could get away with as any normal child will do in growing up. I thought my son was being too hard on him because of his "special needs". Now my grandson washes his own clothes, irons them. Keeps his room clean and sometimes cooks small things for himself. I am glad my son stayed on him. Now Tevin can't wait to get home to do his school work, clean his room, and get ready for the next day. He is even on the A B honor roll at school. You can tell he is autistic, he quotes a lot of things from the tv, and says things sometimes that don't make sence. He has laughing spells, but we tell him to go to his room until he calms down. He goes to a regular school and the kids help him as much as they can. He has a very outgoing personality and the teachers and kids love him. They say he is happy all the time. Not to say that he don't have problems at times. He did have outburst when he was smaller. He is being raised like a normal kid. Thanks to my son, he didn't let the autisim stop him from raising him right. We take him to the doctor every 6 months for check ups. Now he is seeing, in what Tevin calls his nervous Doctor. In which my son and I ask his family Doctor to send him to, because he was having problems with some kids at school bullying him, and wanted to make sure it wasn't bothering him mentally. Tevin says he likes going to the nervous Doctor as he calls him, lol. He is growing up to be a smart and handsome young man and I am so proud of him. Sorry it was so long, but their is a positive side to a special needs child.

Glad to see this sight is up and running.Where you at when my children was small LOL. I have 2 daughters with mild & severe mental retardation. Hope to meet some mums with my similar situations. It was and still is hard for me. They are 23 & 25 yrs. of age. Just as beautiful as can be. They don't understand why folks can be so crazy acting.

OK so at this point it would be considered an early Happy Mother's Day! It's Feb 2010 and I'd like to invite my fellow moms to checkout a new internet based TV show just for families raising children with special needs. You can use this link to help spread the word! http://bit.ly/EFTV_Welcome_FB

Hello, thank you for the Mother's day wish and yes I had a lovely day. My 3 child was born at 8:45 am that day. I now have two boys and a 1 girl. My oldest child has been diagnosed as having a poorly functionly "working memory", apparently this puts him about two years behind his peers in learning at school. He is in gr. 3 this year but is doing gr.1 work with a teachers aid.

I just wanted to say Thank You.... if it wasn't for this site, I wouldn't really have any idea what it would be like to relate to other Moms in my situation. I always felt so alone b/c no one I knew had a special needs child. It's nice to talk to other Moms who knows what it's like to be stared at b/c you don't order food for your child when you go out to eat b/c she is on a feeding tube and doesn't eat food orally by choice!!! So, thank you!!!!
