Hi, I'm a mom of three boys and my oldest is ADHD and has a speech delay. My husband is Air Force and we live in Italy right now. He will be going to K this year. I've always wanted to homeschool my children and I have a teaching certificate for 1st thru 8th grade. Here it is pretty much like a private school so I don't mind sending, but when we return to the states next year it really worries me to think of putting him public schools. I was wondering if anyone has homeschooled their ADHD child and if there is special curriculum to use. I really want to teach him in our home while instilling our values and morals, but I want to do what's best for him.

Mine loved "Learning Language Arts Through Literature" - it uses a book and the dictation method of learning spelling and grammar. It's an excellent program, and they don't get bored by silly "Dick and Jane" type stories. It's real reading, real books. Good stuff.

As far as the ADHD, I found that the best practices are lots of breaks from intense mental effort. As a homeschooler, you can insert PE in between more "seated" classes. Ten minutes at a time, and it's great for the kid. Mine also loved brownies as math manipulatives - fractions, subtraction, addition.... "Is it time to eat Math yet, Mom?" was a frequent request.

Good times!

I have 3 boys, 20, 16, and 4, all 3 have been diagnosed with ADHD, My 2 older boys have gone through the public school system. The middle son and the baby have been in the system since 10 months - they went through EIP 9early intervention program birth - 3), CPSE (preschool to kindergarten)... the 4 yr old is in a specialized preschool and has a special ed teacher, and a speech teacher in the room all day plus he is exposed to sensory integration (they actually do yoga with the kids and teach them breathing techniques to help them calm down when they are upset. The lttle guy is in a public school, I did have a choice of schools to choose including private schools, bit after researching, visiting and talking with staff i found the public school the best fit for him. Teaching a child with ADHD is not something to take on lightly, in the school system there is a speciality, Each child with ADHD learns differently and may have different learning disabilityies, my oldest was a very good reader but couldnt handle math past 3 rd grade... my middle son is a auditory learner, anything he hears he retains, however reading is a challenge for him and yet his IQ is 121, the little one is very visual he is great with puzzles, legos, etc, but his listening capacity is not good. I dont know if I could home tutor my boys. i am not trying to discourage you, I just think you need to do a lot of research into before jumping in, these children get frustrated easily. I do want to tell you that the public schools have a lot of resources at their fingertips and that is a good thing because with the extra help and resources these children can suceed. my oldest is entering his junior year at a private college (Not a community college) and is majoring in graphic design and actually received an art scholarship... If you need infowith the process in the public schools Im a wealth of info. Also try and find someone who did home school a child with special needs and make a pro and con list... good luck...
