My son is 18, as well, and has Tourette's Syndrom. He has had it since about the age of 3, but we didn't get him diagnosed till the age of 15. He isn't on any medication, and never has been. But, his ticks are getting worse. We live inNew Zealand, and not many people know aboutit over here. I'm an American, and would like some help formy son, too. I know it's not curable, and it's heriditary. My Mom also has it and I have it, only in my arms and shoulders. I've been wanting to contact others who have children with it, too, so I can see what they do to help. What causes it, is that the nerve endings that go up into the brain, short circuit, before reaching the brain, which cause the ticks. It would help to know I'm not alone in this. My son quit school in year 11, because of bullying. He is not working yet. Any Mom's out there, wanna be my friend. My e-mail is Joyfulsoul16@yahoo.com

Is your child prone to strep? My son had tourettes but it wasn't real tourettes it was caused but strep antibodies. If you google PANDAS and strep you will find a lot of sites.

Hi! My son is 11 and was diagnosed at the age of 9. He has severe tics including coprolalia, which we control with a combination of risperdal, intuniv, celexa, and buspar. While I don't like having him on so many meds, it is imperative for his everyday functioning. the best advice that I can give you is to surround yourself with the best team of doctors you can find. We have a psychologist, psychiatrist, and neurologist who are fantastic. As a mom, this is the hardest thing I have ever done, but you have to remember that as hard as it is for you to watch him go through this, it is much harder for them. Make sure that your family has a good support network because that can make all the difference in the world. Also, remember that there are families out there just like you who know exactly what you are going through. We will be thinking of you!

My son is 18 years old and has tourettes. He was diagnosed with it at the age of 4. There is no cure for it, but medications can help control it. We spent several years going to a wonderful neurologist in Houston, TX at Baylor College of Medicine. We were in a special study for a medication that is used for Parkinsons and Tourettes. It is such a blessing. It is now FDA approved and my son takes it 2-3 times a day. It is called Xenazine. It is very expensive without insurance. Before it was approved, we had to pay only the cost which at the time was $300 per month. Now with our insurance we only pay $30 per month. He takes 25mg 2-3 times per day and it really keeps the tics under control. Without it, he is unable to function at school or work. If you have any more questions, please feel free to contact me at sidamichelle@cox.net. God bless.
