I have a 17 year old daughter who currently qualifies for Medicaid due to her health (she has a trach and is on a ventilator) but I am being told I need to 'reapply' for Medicaid for her when she turns 18. Has anyone else ever gone through this? Any tips? I was hoping just to 'transition' to adult benefits, not re-apply (and risk being denied). She will also quality for social securtiy when she turns 18 and I am afraid this will make her ineligible for Medicaid, which helps with nursing costs. Please help if you know anything about this.

that is true u will need to reapply depending on what state you in by law in some states they are not required to cover a child with medical insurance once they turn 18 no if she qualify for ssi she will also be elgible for medicaid it will jus be her on adult status instead of minor status the rules change when u get 18 and everything must be redone

My son lost his SSI/Medicaid because of child support that I receive. Does anyone know if he's eligible for the Medicaid Waiver Program here in Texas?

My son will turn 18 in Sept. I went to the ss office when I received a letter from them stating he will lose his benefits on his father at 18 unless a full time student. He is not able to get ssi because of our incomes. When he turns 18 he can draw as a disabled adult. That way he will keep his medicaid under his ssi. Yes we did have to reapply for him as an adult. I suggest GO to the ss office to talk to them yourself to be sure what your rights are. Take all documents showing disability with you. The more the better. I have had times in the last 18 years I have felt I should have a chair with my name on it there because of the time I have spent there. Good luck

Who told you, you need to reapply? She should be eligible for Medicaid as a child until she turns 21...At that point you will have to reapply because she will then qualify as disabled. If she receives medicare because she's disabled, there shouldn't be a problem with her being eligible.

You may need to reapply at age 18 because then they will look at only your daughters assets and income, not yours anymore. In Wisconsin, if you get SSI, you also get medicaid.

Get in touch with the social security office in your area. They can help you with everything you need for SSI and Medicaid. There is no reapplying at age 18, but there is a reevaluation at that time. Social Security will help with that as well.

My son is only 5 (recieves SSI and has state ins. for Spina Bifida). When they r a minor (under 18) therir eligibility is determined by your income. But when they reach adulthood (18 yrs) you ust reapply for them as an adult (even if they r still under your care, everything changes because they r an adult). If you do not reapply, they will be getting nothing. Best wishes!

If they are under 18, their parents income play a huge role. My son, who has CP among other conditions, was automatically declined for SSI bc of his father's income. But yes, here in the US anyone getting SSI automatically gets medicaid.

I don't know about Michigan benifits, but I do know that here in Texas, if she is eligable for SSI she will have mediad automatically and there is no need to reappl you just have to choose which plan. Why is it that she can't receive SSI at the age she is now?
