A couple weeks ago my son woke up extremely lethargic and wouldn't move for anything. I checked his blood glucose lvl and it was 47. So I fed him and it shot up to 288 so we rushed to the ER. While they they pricked him again and he was at 183, 3 hours after eating. They also found acetone in his urine. That is all they did though and sent us home. We followed up w/ the pedi and they referred us to an endocrinologist. We saw them and talked w/ them and they checked his A1c and it was normal. All other bloodwork as well was fine. So we were told to just keep an eye on him and only check him when we think something is up and if he is acting funny again.

Yesterday my son woke up and was sitting next to me in bed and was supposed to be eating. Well he passed out ane when he came to (only 30 seconds or so later) he was ery lethargic again and acting like he had previously. I figured he was low again so I checked to make sure. He was 195!! He hadn't eaten in 12 hours! So I called the on-call endocrinologist (per their instructions) and told them what was going on. They said they think he must be in the early stages and is probably dehydrated which is why he passed out. We get there and they do blood work and urine work and find NOTHING!!! Nothing at all! NO explanation! No idea what is going on!

He has also been getting some high readings off and on. I have checked him when I noticed he was peeing abnormally way too much and his readings were 156 and 167 and they had been at least 5 hours since his last meal.

I dunno what is going. But if anyone has ANY ideas at all! Please please please, tell me so I can bring it up to his doctors!!!! We're beyond at a loss!!!

Hi,
My son was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when he was 8.
I do not understand why the dr is not doing anything about your sons BG.
That honestly blows my mind.
His BG being 190-210 is certianly NOT in range...
My son has gone to the Barbara Davis center for childhood diabetes for almost 10 years now.
We are in Colorado,Arizona is not that far, could you take him there?
People from other countries go there, they are the leading team in type 1 diabetes research and care.
You can call them, and I am sure they will at least be willing to talk to you or your Endo you are using now.

Here is a link to the web site

Dr Chase(who was my sons first Endo, tho is retired now) wrote this book on type 1 diabetes,it is a excellent book.
Here is the link for that as well

Bobbi drink 8 oz of water every 4 hours to clean your body toxins out and it should level....my mother was having the same issue with high blood sugar and we now have it under control..hers was so high the meter could not read it now it is between 180-210. which is still a little high but we are still working on getting it down more but this took about a month just to get this result.

I EAT RIGHT, I TEST MY BLOOD 8 TIMES A DAY AND I TAKE 4 SHOTS A DAY AND 2 DIFFERENT PILLS. SOMETIMES I JUST WANT TO GIVE UP . NOTHING IS WORKING. I COUNT CARBS, I WATCH SUGAR AND FAT. NOTHING AHAS WORKED. I ONLY WISH SOMEONE COULD HELP ME

What the other moms have said here is great advice! I would like to add a couple more suggestions. Often during a pre-diabetic stage, there can be significant low sugar as well as high sugar events. The pancreas is just not functioning properly and can both over and under produce insulin. If the high sugar times are of short duration, then the A1c number will still read in the normal range. I suggest that you check your son at some standard set times so that you will then have data to show the doctors. I would check just before bedtime, first thing in the morning, before and after every meal, and two hours after every meal. I know this a lot of times, but after 3 or 4 days (or a week at most), especially if you have widely varying values, you will have valuable data to show the doctors. You should also make note of everything he eats and when. Hang in there! And be sure to keep a close eye on your son. This may be your most difficult period while your son's body is in this pre-diabetic stage (assuming that is what is going on). Other than carefully watching you son, there may not be much that the doctors can do until your son's body settles into a more steady pattern. I think this was mentioned by someone else, but try to limit your son intake of things containing sugar or simple carbs. These can cause initial high sugar followed significant low sugar during this pre-diabetic stage. I hope this helps. I am happy to provide additional help and clarification if you want. Take care!

always have beef jerky sticks, orange juice, and cheese nips on hand.....my son who is now 14 went throught the same thing...we had one week to get it under control with diet before the doctors would decide if it needed to be treated with insulin.....that god that the diet worked and he is doing great.

To get a new doctor, just bring him to the ER, state you already worked with Dr. X, you are not satisfied with the care your child is receiving, you expect him to be evaluated appropriately and treated as well by another doctor.

His A1c has come back at 5.2% the first time and when he was in the ER this last time they checked it again but they never gave me the number. The problem with finding a new doctor is we are going to one of the nations top hospitals. We go to Phoenix Children's Hospital. So I fear leaving them and going to another and getting worse treatment, know what I mean? And how do I go about finding a new doctor?

From all the research and conversations with other moms this should have already been enough to be a diagnosis too but for whatever reason they refuse to monitor him or diagnose him or anything. They have said they think he could be pre-diabetic but they won't do anything "official" and then no one takes it seriously. The biggest reason they don't feel it's an issue is because he isn't losing weight. But it's not like he is gaining gobs and gobs of it! He has just stayed on the scale at the same weight or gained very little. But hasn't lost since last yr after he turned one.

So, any suggestions on how to go about finding a new doctor??

By the way, your doctors should know this and if they do not, it's time for new doctors.

A1C levels show blood sugar stability long term, as in 2 weeks to 3 months. If he's having highs and lows such as you're describing and it's new (as it not diagnosed as diabetic) he needs to be admitted to the hospital and monitored as he may be a new diabetic.
