Does anyone have a child who was or is in a spica cast for hip dysplasia? My daughter just had her closed reduction surgery today and will be in a spica for 6 months. Any advice or tips are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

my daughter was in one at 2 years old,she had right hip dysplasia .if she wears diapers ,make sure she is checked often so she doesn't get an infection.we used kotex pads in the opening between her legs, then large diapers,it worked out well. while she is sitting, make sure she is reclined, you don't want cast to push against her stomach.she wore lots of dresses and oversized t-shirts around the house.we took off the front tray on our stroller and the fit perfectly! her doc also said use a cool hair dryer if it gets wet,we had no problems with it.

If you see this, leave this form field blank.

I wish I would have seen your post earlier. I used a bean bag chair to postion my daughter I found it very useful. I could flip her over to her stomache, side or back to make her as comfortable as possible. At night I would set the bean bag chair on the floor next to my bed so I could reposition her during the night. My daughter was not potty trained so I would put a Kotex in the diaper then tuck it in the cast and to keep it in place I would use adult diapers on top of that diaper and the cast. I rented an adult reclining wheel chair to get her around. I would roll her in the bathroom everyday and sponge bathe her and I used a hand held shower head to wash her head. We played beauty parlor everyday. I think it made her feel good. I could also take her for walks in the neighborhood in the wheelchair. I bought a lot of paints, color books, playdough and blocks for her to play with (it gets very boring as you probably know) I used a lap tray for her to rest her color books on proped up by a pillow. I did use many pillows to repositon her and her table with. Hang in there! I know it is hard!

Hi. One of my daughters was in a spica cast. I don't know if your kid is still in diapers or not but My kids is. It is not a pleasent thing. The cast do not stay clean no matter how hard you try. My kid ended up getting a sore on her tail bone from it as well. My best advise for you would be movies and a blow dryer. My kid watched a lot of movies and when we washed her (sponge washed) the padding could get wet. The skin being wet all the time is not so go and with the sore it was even worse. I would put her on her tummy and use the blow dryer (on cool) and a fan and blow dry it at least a couple times a day. She loved it and laughed a lot. (remember to keep it cool) Also you can replace some of the padding in the cast from time to time. Good luck..

My daughter had bilateral hip surgery 14 years ago and was in a spica cast. Depending on her age/size we figured out that a child's recliner was very comfortable for her. Also, a stroller that can be laid down with a pillow on top (a wagon would work too) was great for walks because the cast was so heavy she couldn't roll. Allison wore dresses a lot because the fit well over the cast. Diapering was our one issue that was a little hard...but we learned to tuck the diaper under the cast. Good luck!
