We were so excited when we found out that our city would have it's first challenger flag football team this season.

We signed Elijah up for his first challenger team and boy has it been a challenge for us! It has been so hot this last month and our Elijah hates the heat. His team only practices 1 time a week and has 1 game on the weekend. It has been a struggle to get Elijah out on the field mostly everytime, which is very stressful for me. I thought he would love this, but I guess I should have realized that this is his first team sport and it would be a struggle. Should I just keep trying without pushing too hard? He is only 8 and most of the boys on the team are older, so they have been playing sports for years.

I agree with Angela. Please do not push on this. Let him go set on the side lines if that is what he wants to do. That is as important if not than more important to have some one to cheer the players on. Offer him the chance to play next year but do not push. I have one child that likes sports and one that does not. There will have to be times you will have to push him into doing somthing he does not want to do. Stick to the battles you HAVE to fight. THERE WILL BE PLENTY. That is the advice I have to say to you.

Ask him. Was he excited when you told him that you got him on the team? Let him lead. If he doesn't want to do it now, bring it up again next year. Take him to the game to let him watch. We don't have any special types of teams here, but in the spring, we sign up for baseball/t-ball and my son wants to do it, but he usually just sits in the outfield and eats clover. He loves getting to hit the ball and run to first base. The coach lets him do these things, next year we'll have to do something else as the game speeds up (no t-ball). I know he likes to be included. Maybe your son would just like to be on the sidelines and cheer on the team? Just a thought. Good luck. I wouldn't push on this, there are so many things that truly need that push.
