I am on metformin ER twice a day to lose weight. My cycles regulated on its own although I still have problems with excess hair. Is there anyone else out there who is NOT losing weight on metformin?

I will admit that I don't always take the full dosage. Between being a full time mom, student and working I don't always have time to eat and usually don't eat until around 2 in the afternoon. These pills make me REALLY sick if i don't eat first so usually I take one pill at night after dinner. Am I not losing weight because i'm not taing taking the full dose? I see other women saying they've lost 40lbs etc. I lose and gain back the same 5 lbs for the past 6 months.

I take 500mg of metformin 3 times a day to regulate my periods. I took with clomid 4 years ago to conceive my twin boys. We are trying again but it isn't regulating my period this time like it did before. I always lose like 20lbs. when I start taking it and then it just stays the same no matter what I do.

Christy, talk to your regular doctor about your dosing. Your OB is only going to worry about conception, your regular doctor will listen to your concerns. I had the same issue after I had my daughter in 2008. The OB told me I didn't need to take the metformin at all, but my regular doctor (who prescribed it in the first place) laughed at that. She knew that it was to help offset the weight and other symptoms associated with PCOS. I currently take 1000mg a day. I'm not sure about the Yaz, but every woman is different. I lost 40lb while taking both Yaz and metformin. I've been off the bc for a year now, but only because I don't want to be on it. On the facial hair, wax wax wax! After a few treatments, it will be finer and lighter. Good luck! And if you need to vent, write on my profile.

How long did it take you to lose the 40? I can try taking it at night I don't know how it's going to go over with me taking a prenatal, two fenugreek and then two metformin all at night.

I have been overweight all of my life.
Then I got Hashimoto's Thyroid Disease and my life literally fell apart...not kidding.
I went from 260 pounds to 373 in a matter of about 6 months...thus starting a nightmare that has lasted me at least 10 years
Part of the problem was my Doctor put me on synthetic thyroid and I can not take it...
I also was severly depressed...because my thyroid was so bad...and they put me on anti-depressants...thus the weight gain.
I found out about armour thyroid...a natural thyroid and once on that my weight slowly...very slowly started coming down.
I was at 310 pounds when I was diagnosed with Sugar Diabetes...my Doctor put me on Metformin http://onlinepharmacyreviews.org/ingredi... and low and behold I started losing weight.
I must say that I also researched diet and discovered that low carb is the best for Diabetes in my opinion.
But for me Metformin has been a miracle drug because it slashed my enormous appetite...I was always hungry...always...all types of thyroid medicines increase my appetite.
Now I would say I have a pretty normal appetite...I can resist food...which is a miracle for me.
I can make good food choices.
I did have the bad bathroom problem...there for awhile everyday...multiple times a day...ugh.
But now after 8 months I only have an incident occasionally...for me...losing weight was worth it all.
I have lost 69 pounds and have continued to...if I eat badly I gain...but I love the low carb way of life. And my bg is like a normal person and that is the way I want to keep it. I average 8 pounds a month...and I am very happy about it!

When I first started Metformin (not ER), I lost weight & was only taking 500 mg/day for about 6 months. Then my dose was increased to 500 mg twice daily & I got pregnant the following month, so I obviously gained, but only about 20 lbs. I lost all of my baby weight by my 2 weeks checkup (post C-section). My daughter is now 15 months & I am back up to my delivery weight. :( I have been thinking of asking my DR to increase my dose. MY OB said we'd increase it when I wanted to get pregnant again, but I was losing weight for the first time in my life (I'm 34) & I'd love to get back to that. I think a large part of my problem is I'm also on Yaz, so I think it's making me gain & offsetting benefit of Metformin. I still have bad excess facial hair with the Met & the B.C. so I'm frustrated.

This is very interesting and did not think that the Metformin really worked. I was told to take this 1 1/2 ago and was not faithful taking them as they made me sick, I feel nausea all the time, light headed and sorry ladies but always running to the bathroom with watered down poo. it was horrible and I stopped. I have PCOS and I was told that help lose weight and reugalte my periods as they have gone wacky in the past two years after having regualr 28 day cycles. This is the hardest thing for me in my life and I want a child so bad. I guess I better start taking those pills and doing what I need to do. I am over weight by alot and I wanted to know is anyone else out there really obese and trying to concieve?? Is it really our weight?? and does anyoe have help on how to lose some weight I love food and cant stop eating bad stuff. I was thinking to get the LAPBAND as we quick way out??

It took about a year to lose it. I would lose 1-2, even 3 lbs, a week, for a few weeks, then plateau for a month. I was also very active, my daughter was just starting to be mobile when I started losing weight, so I was doing a lot of chasing. :-)

Hi Sherron, I am supposed to take 500mg metformin twice a day, but since I'm really bad about remembering to take medication in the morning, I take both doses at bedtime. It helps with the upset stomach because it seems to take longer to get into your system when you're sleeping. Also, by not eating anything until 2, your body is storing the foods that you are eating. Eat breakfast, it will kickstart your metabolism, and snack healthy during the day to keep it going.

I hope this helps. And if it makes you feel any better, I've gained back 10 of the 40lbs I had lost. Mostly due to Edy's ice cream and the fry-daddy my husband got for Easter. :-)
