Let me explain..

I've had two different people refer to my 14 month old daughter as "sexy" recently. I do not think that either of these people meant any harm or in no way shape or form a threat to my daughter. I think they were just saying how pretty or cute she is. I just found it odd that anybody would even think to use a term such as that when talking about a child.

When person #2 said this just yesterday I gave her a look like "what" and told her not to refer to my daughter as sexy. She's cute, pretty, adorable... anything else.

Again, I want to make it clear that I know in my heart of hearts that these people are NOT perverts. I was just curious if anybody else has had this happen?

I would never refer to a child as "sexy". Cute, adorable, beautiful, handsome. Yes. Sexy? No! I know 14 months is a little young, but what if she asked you what that meant or if she has an older sibling that asked you? Good for you for suggesting the proper adjectives. I find it kind of atrocious that these are grown ups who can't use the English language properly. I say this because to me, "sexy" is like a slang word. You probably won't find that word being used to describe a child in a book or even a magazine. It almost makes me think these people are not that educated if they can't come up with a proper adjective to describe a small child!

Hey Jackie! I've never had my child called sexy! lol
If a grown man said it (stranger) I would be creeped out, but if it was a female friend... I wouldn't be insulted. I would think it was a joke.
I don't think the person a "sexual deviant" because they said a WORD trying to be funny. Now physically touching your child... that would be classified as a "sexual deviant".

Bahhh oh well. I know that I'm no deviant so not too worried about what others think. ;) Of course I'd never call him that in public or around anyone else even. It's just a joke.

Well Lisa, I just asked my husband and at first he looked at me confused, like I was weird. Haha! Then, he asked me in what context and who was saying it. (Like I had said.) So I told him how you and your husband talk about your little one... he agrees with me. It's all about who says it and what context it's said in. And, if a stranger says it then it's just weird. If a family member/friend says it but the context is 'off' then he'd be offended. Other than that, he doesn't think anything is wrong with it either.

For me to have to think along the lines that it's sexually related or sexually deviant, it would have to be offensive or something would have to be off about the way someone said it.

Yeah, I'm sorry, I've got to go with Sharon on this one. I know that you mean it in the cute adorable sense Lisa, but somehow for me, sexy just equals a sexual thing. The idea of saying my daughter was sexy just creeps me out, and I've got an alarmingly open mind when it comes to all things sex related, lol. Honestly, if I heard someone calling their child sexy, I'd be a little concerned. We call our daughter "monkey" and she thinks she is Curious George.

Oh? Is that what we were talking about? LOL! I don't think it's appropriate to call a child sexy....kinda weird and creepy!

I'm sorry - I give up. I've tried & tried to wrap my head around calling a child "sexy" versus "pumpkin" and it just doesn't match up. Pumpkins are plump, round, tasty, cute- Princess is an attitude, and sexy, well, it just refers to sexuality?

Call your kid sexy if you want. I'm sorry but if I hear it in public I'll just be thinking you're sexually deviant.

She DEFINITELY takes after her dad's side.....I certainly don't have blonde hair or blue eyes! LOL! The resemblance b/w Chad's sister (when she was Roxanne age) and Roxanne is uncanny!

He's not a pumpkin.....more of a squash! Hahaha!

Uhhh I hate to say it but that makes you a pumpkin also... unless she takes after her father more than he's a pumpkin and you are... not?

Agree Suzette.
We don't literally think our boy is sexy! Just referring to the fact that he's just had a bath. It's similar to if you call your child 'pumpkin' or 'princess' or some other pet name. You don't literally think your child is a pumpkin...

Sharon it's all how a person looks at things. If you think it's referring to sex, then it's referring to sex. There's a lot of people out there that don't think like that though. And, there are also people out there that believe that when they are talking about adults vs babies the meaning changes drastically. Of course there are the pervs out there that don't think that, that's why it all depends on who is saying it. If a stranger walked up to me and told me my daughter (when she's here obviously) was sexy, I'd be offended. If it were someone I knew and they were talking in baby talk, it would be different dependent upon what exactly was said.

Referring to the phrase "sexy" - I don't understand how context is a factor? There is only one definition for sexy? It doesn't refer to pretty, or disposition. Its sex. I'm still wanting to vomit after reading this post.

Lisa, I don't think it's weird. I think everyone has their own comfort level with these things. Some people don't like it unless it's someone they know who says it to their children. For example, my neighbor and I constantly joke about how her little one is going to attract lots of girls because he is downright handsome and he's got the most charismatic smile ever. (He truly does, lol.) But I'm sure if someone she didn't know said that, she may take offense. Just like if someone my niece's mother didn't know called her gorgeous, my niece's mom might take offense. Others might take it as a compliment. But the sexy thing, I think it's all in how it's said really... and who it's said by too.

This post kind of confused me a little! I can understand being upset if a stranger referred to your little girl as sexy. That's just weird! But my husband and I sometimes call our 8 month old (and have done for a while) sexy bub after his bath. I kind of say 'look daddy it's the sexy bub!' and my husband will say 'aarrgghh it's the sexy bub!' Then my son will kick his little legs and laugh. We just think it's funny... is that weird??

I started calling my niece Gorgeous from the time she was born. No one else has ever called her that, it's my nickname for her. Though as she's grown up I've stopped, I had to... not because it was anything wrong - and no one in our family (her mom - one of my closest friends - or her dad - my brother) ever saw anything wrong with it. I stopped because we were walking through walmart one day and some lady stopped in front of us and told her she was beautiful. (She was 6 at the time.) She put her hand on her hip and she said, "No, I'm gorgeous, my Tia tells me ALL the time. Thanks though." I stood there shocked, and thankful she didn't say it in a snotty tone. (I did make her apologize and explained she should just say thank you to a compliment.)
But I stopped calling her that because I thought her self esteem was getting a bit too big for her britches. I want her to be confident, but not cocky or arrogant. She's still got the self esteem... though the arrogance has worn off, thankfully. :)

Loureen, if I was your mom, I would have gone off on that hooker! Heck no would someone talk like that to my husband if I'm standing right there..

Nope. I would knock somebody upside the head if they referred to my child as 'sexy'.. That is something I just don't take lightly. No baby should ever be referred to as sexy. I call my son handsome and cutie and baby (b/c no matter what age my kid(s) are, to me they will always be my baby).. But heck no. No way in the world would I ever let someone call my young child sexy. They would have a beat down coming their way if they let those words escape their mouth. Sorry.. I just don't see how anyone can mean that with the best intentions when they call a 14m old little girl sexy, or any young child for that matter.. It's just not right in my book.

No, i've heard it on here before though.
Not a comment i would ever make. Sexy = grown ups to me, not kids!

Similar thing, i was at work and i heard a woman saying to her friends little boy (who was about 3 or 4) "I love you long time!" (in the accent and everything) and the little boy repeating it back. I felt like saying "Do you even know where that comes from?!?!?!"
She was also calling him sexy, and "hot".
I thought it was inappropriate to be honest.
His Mum was laughing away though.

Ive had one person say this to me about my daughter, my niece, she is 19. she meant it as cute and nothing more i explained it was not an appropriate way to describe a toddler.
She hades even realises as her and her friends call each other sexy all the time. But if anyone else had said it they would of gotten some choice words from me its very inappropriate to call a child sexy

I think I may have said it about one of my kids as a complete joke, because children are so far from sexy that it could only be done in a funny way, like if your hubby had on the most ridiculous outfit and you called him sexy even though it was far from it - You are right there are so many other words to describe children in a favourable way - never sexy!!

Sorry that is foul is on so many levels and I can't begin to imagine wth is going through a persons head for them to say or think that a child is sexy.

The only thing that comes to mind is that they are ignorant. not stupid, ignorant. They have no idea what sexy really is. They couldn't possibly or they wouldn't call a child "sexy."

I haven't had it happen with my daughter or heard anyone else refer to their own child as "sexy". But I have seen it mentioned before on COM. I think you did the right thing correcting them. It sounds like they were just using "sexy" like we might use cute or adorable. But it really is inappropriate when describing children. And rather weird too.

I also want to add that over the years I've had friends that have referred to their own children as sexy. Like, "My sexy lil man," or something like that. I just find it very strange and would NEVER EVER say that about my kids. It gives me a very sick feeling in my stomach for some reason.
