My daughter will turn 3 in JUne and i am having trouble getting her to use the toilet or her potty. She loves not having her nappy on but insteasd of letting us know she need to go she will either go hide or just stand there and do it in her nickers. any suggestions anyone pleas. She will go to kindy next year so i need to get her out of her nappies and use the toilet.

I'm having exactly the same problem with my 3yr old boy so any help would be great. He refuses to use the toilet at all and insists on wearing a nappy. I dont want to force him as he is a stuborn as a mule and I think I'd just be making a rod for my own back. Need advice on how to convince him its his idea to go on the toilet.

At three I would just use the toilet with a step and seat. None of my three kids had a potty they trained straight to the toilet. If you are serious about wanting to get her fully potty trained then you must stop using pull up pants or nappies completly in the day as this is giving her mixed messages. Pull up pants stops the sensation of being wet so the child does not understand why she is dry when she has a wee in them but not in pants. Take her to the toilet every hour until she has peed. If she is dry then use a reward chart with stickers to encourage her to go to the toilet herself. At three she is old enough to understand what she is doing and if she runs off and hides and does it then talk to her and ask her why she will not use the toilet. Another way is to let her come in with you and then keep telling her she is being a big girl just like mummy. Different things work for different children. It is very frustrating for both you and her so try and praise the success and ignore the failures.

Our little boy is 2 and a bit and we've only just started to try and get him to think about using the potty or toilet. We got a seat that went on the toilet with the step and handle attached but he wouldnt have a bar of it! We have just bought a potty and he will sit on it with his clothes on but not nappy off so we're not making very good progress I'm affraid! We'll just take it real slow but hoping to have gotten there by Oct when number 2 arrives.
