My 3 year old son is very constipated. I have tried almost everything and sometimes it works for the moment but then a few days later he goes back to being constipated. Does anyone have any words of wisdom for me?

My doctor recommended the apple juice when my son started on cow milk,or giving him pieces of apple. with my son he has had constipation since birth, and at that time I was giving him the karo syrup (the dark one) and I was giving him 1 teaspoon with each bottle as he needed and it always worked

We are having the same problem - my daughter is 21 months, and our pediatrician did recommend Miralax about a month ago. We have been using about a teaspoon or a bit more a day - it works fairly well to make things softer, but if I miss giving it to her for even one day, she is constipated again - and even when her stools are soft, she is obviously emotionally "worked up" about "pooping" - she will talk about it for several hours before going, often wiggling, whining, crying. It is so horrible to watch, and we are not sure what else to do. I hate thinking of her as being dependant on a chemical so young in her life! Any suggestions / comments are appreciated! It seemed to start when we switched from primary source of milk being breast milk to whole milk - we do sitll nurse twice a day, but I am not sure how much milk she really gets from that - more just a comfort-thing at this point, I think!

First question; Have you talked with your pediatrician? does he like apple juice--try the all natural, or prune juice..stay away from laxatives, suppositories and stool softners. He is too young for this type stuff. Best bet is to talk to pediatrician first and see if he/she has any suggestions

give him only organic apple juice and as little milk as possible,, the juice will soften the stool

You could use Miralax. It is tasteless and you can mix it in anything. He won't know that you even out it in. It may take a few days to kick in but works awesome.

My 3 yr old granddaughter has been constipated since she was born. When she was 2 her doctor (from Hershey Medical Center, in Hershey, PA) told my daughter in law to give her a tablespoon of Karo syrup in her sippy cup with juice. That didn't work, so they upped the dose. It still didn't work, so they told her to start her on Miralax. She mixes it in her juice twice a day and it seems to work so far. We also sit her in a warm bath, and that sometimes helps. Having her eat lots of fruit, like grapes, peaches and strawberries also works. I feel for you because there's nothing worse than seeing your child suffer in pain. Good luck and God bless!

Water, water, water and plenty of fruit. If that doesn't work. Mineral oil. A teaspoon on top of ice cream once a day at the same time for a month at least. That should do the trick. A relaxing bath helps things along - be prepared to change the water. Just relax... nature will take its course - and he will poop. My now 14 year old daughter was exactly like that, for years. She outgrew it but any change to her routine - she returns to old habits.
