My last son went to college last Saturday! After raising 5 sons, my husband and I of 35 years, came home and sat down and just relaxed. We did not fix a dinner for us, he had a PBJ sandwich and ice cream, and I had a salad with a glass of wine. What a great feeling. And you want to know what else, we DID NOT go to the parents meeting at the college. We have heard from our son just once, yesterday when I texted him about how his first day was. I know that some people will think that I am a bad Mom for not going to the meeting, for not calling him or texting him about what to do, or even to see how he was feeling about college. I know that he is going to be fine, in his text he said that he has met a lot of people, and is thinking about getting a job on campus so he is not so bored, he likes to be busy. So I think we did a great job raising him to leave home, no matter what some of my friends have said. So I am dancing around the house and loving it!

I listen to a talk radio personality that gives information. he stated that this generation of college bound kids are to often products of helicopter parenting. Hovering parents have even been known to take the first day of classes with them! I toot a big hurray horn for you independent son and his very smart parents!

I must say congrats :)
This is the type of thing that I want and strive for with my kids. I have a few years to go yet (they're only 3 and 1.5 :P) but I would love, when the time comes, for them to walk out our door with full confidence in themselves, and that I will also have full confidence in them.
I raise my children to be independent and capable. I know I'll miss them when they leave home. Like crazy. But I am doing my best to make sure they are capable and that they KNOW they are capable.
Good luck and absolutely congratulations on the new freedom and empty nest :P May there be many more PBJ dinners, icecream desserts and may the wine flow freely :P
