My daugther is 7 and started school this year, is it just me or have things changed she has already done two speeches and two poems and its not easy teaching her when se cant even read the flash cards that were to be made.

Regarding the math I feel the need to go back to school just so that i can find out how they are teaching the kids to do math, its is totally differs from the way i was taught. Its also no wonder our kids can not spel properly as they are taught to recognise the words and not to sound it out and then learn the spelling, She can read quite well she loves it and tries to read every word she sees, being Afrikaans at home does not help as all the words on billboards and so on are in English but she does try.

It's not just you. They are learning advanced math concepts in 2nd grade now. And you may find when helping with math homework, that you aren't doing it the way they are teaching the kids. We had the hardest time with my older kids with that. At least with my 7 yr old they are teaching them math shortcuts that we understand and can help with. I'm sure the school will be pushing your girl to read as quickly as possible, since they want the kids to know so much more at the end of each grade than we had to. But in the U.S. anyway, there is SO much more help for kids with different learning styles, or difficulties in specific subjects. If you start seeing problems, ask how the school can help. They have to provide assistance. But you are right, it's definitely not easier!
