I was at my daughters' school today and noticed 4th grade students in makeup. I don't mean lip gloss I mean eyeliner, eye shadow, mascra and blush. This lead me to think that my almost 11 year old is going to want to start wearing makeup soon. I thought I'd let her wear makeup at 13 - am I ancient and behind the times? When did you allow your daughters to start wearing makeup??

I dont think your ancient or behind the times at all. I do think that way too many girls are exposed to tv shows that tell them this is how they should dress and behave etc. And other moms dont want to say no to their kids so it's allowed. Peer pressure has been around since the beginning of time and will continue to be.

Whether they wear make-up or not, what matters is that you raise a child with a positive self-image. They will decide on their own if they think make-up is necessary or not. Put your efforts into teaching your daughter that what matters is what's on the inside. The rest will take care of itself.

my daughter just turned twelve and she is allowed to wear a little lipgloss and appropriate eye shadow...very natural. She does have friends at school that wear full out makeup...I tell my daughter she is beautiful just the way she is and doesn't need all that stuff on her face! She is allowed to wear a little blush if she is going out to her pre-teen dances though. Fourth grade is a little much though...I do agree

Wow! When my daughter was in fourth grade, I didn't let her wear anything more than eyeshadow/blush. No mascara or eyeliner - I want her to look human, not like a raccoon.

I personally think it is ok once they reach junior high (here that means grade 7) now I am not talking full out makeup, but allowed my niece while staying with us last year to use blush, a softer eye shadow and some gloss. She was 4 months from turning 13.

Thank God, Marcie is not asking for makeup but I thought it might be coming soon. We talked about it last night and she said that she wasn't interested in it yet and she thinks the girls look like clowns (THANK YOU JESUS). She is using skin care products since we all have bad skin and I figure you can't start taking care of your skin too early. Thank you ladies for all your support and help. Sometimes, I just go off the deep end when I realize how quickly kids are growing up.

I think that there comes a time when you have to be a partent and not a friend and lay down the law , no child at that age should wear make up and if the parent doesnt speak up then you give the child the power and once you do that you loose,

You're not being ancient & behind times.

I, too, allowed my daughters to wear make-up when they're 13

but they started using their skincare products when they were 12, especially once they got their menses.

Even now, my eldest girl is 15 & the 2nd is 13, they only wear very simple make-up without mascara & blushers. I feel it's more suitable for their age.

Wow - 4th graders. My 11 year old daughter has friends that have just started wearing make-up but she has no desire to do so. Does your daughter ask to wear make-up to school?
