I started a new community called "Moms over 40 trying to get fit and healthy" . I want to share ideas and experiences how to slow down aging....and stay healthy. Being over 40, it is more difficult to lose the "muffin top", you get aches or pains for no reason, you loose energy, etc. I want to be in my 70s still running around instead of being in the nursing home. Please come and join the community!

Hello, I just joined Circle of Moms and stumbled upon this post. I'm in my 40s and a first time mom to 18 mo.old twin boys. I just wrote a post on my blog at www.MamaInHeels.com about eating healthy and shedding pounds naturally. Here is the link: http://mamainheels.com/2012/11/19/eating...

I don't have any suggestions, but I know what you are talking about. I am 50 now, and have been overweight my entire life. I have had back surgery, and live in pain every day. I can barely walk (use a cane most of the time), so that makes exercise pretty much out of the question. How does someone like me go about getting this ugly disgusting fat off?

Hey Ladies. The truth is, upper body weight training is very important. There are two things, really: 1. is the weight training and 2. is to do interval training: 30 seconds intense activity (i.e., lunges, jumping jacks, running) and 30 seconds walking. Do 8 to 12 sets of this. Or you can do 60 seconds intense exercise and 90 seconds walking. It burns fat if you do bursts like this. Aerobics of 45 minutes is more for cardiovascular health. A pound is 3500 calories. In a marathon the average runner only burns upwards of 2200 calories. So if you do the math, exercise alone won't burn the fat, but if you eat less calories and more densely nutrition-packed ones, and do the above exercise, along with some toning like Pilates 3 x a week.

Watch the carbs. Hope this helps. I'm a retired chiropractic physician

1) Workout at home, you do not need to find time to go to the gym

2) find a friends to workout with.

3) do different workouts, you will find many on youtube.

If you want to connect your TV to the computer here is a good how to

Count me in! I think it takes more energy to raise kids once they hit the teen years than it did chasing them around as toddlers! I need to be strong and healthy--not only to enjoy my time to the fullest with my kids, but to be the best role model for them to live healthy themselves. This is a great idea!

Hi, Rita.
43 is not old at all!! I just did my first 5K and there were a lot of people who were older than me passing me!! Running just once a week is better than not doing anything.

Hi, Rita. I guess it gets harder to lose weight when you are older, because of your metabolism slows down. One of the best ways to boost the metabolism is to exercise! Here is a great article: http://www.webmd.com/fitness-exercise/gu...

Nori, I'm Rita age 48yrs, work as a nurse full time and have two grown-up daughters. Sometimes I'm very tired after work but I do my best to keep fit. At work I eat only fruits and drink lots of water, in the evenings I eat a snack consisting of veg. mostly lots of tomatoes because I like them very much, in the late evenings I eat with my family, lots of salads combining with meat. everyday I exercise on my aiawalker for 35mins. Six months ago my weight went up to 80 kilos but now I'm already 72 kilos, my target weight is to 68 kilos like I was before but since I was over 40 I'm finding it more difficult to loose these 4 kilos. I'm almost in my menopause and I think that's why it's more difficult to loose weight ! But I also think like you do that when I'm older I'm still fit to do my exercises and look younger !!

I am exactly like most of you. I am 43 w/two kids, ages 5 and 2. I started gaining weight at about 30 and for the next several years lost and gained repeatedly. I was in shape, going to a gym 5 days a week seven years ago. But after getting married, lazy and having my two beautiful babies, I found priorities changed. I have devoted my time to my kids but now want it to be me. I want to be a good example for my children.

I agree! Once you turn 40 you have to watch what you eat more closely and try and get some excercise everyday to avoid what I call "creeping obesity". One day your happy and healthy and 3 years later your 20 lbs overweight! Yipes!

Lisa, congratulations on losing 141 lbs! That's a great accomplishment. Is that just watching what you eat? I track my diet and workout using this iPhone app. called "lose it" It seems to work pretty good. I know what I ate that day and I pay more attention to what I'm eating. I try not to buy anything like candy bars. If I have them around I would eat them. Instead of candy bars, I keep soyjoys or Luna bars around. They are about 140 kcal and very tasty!

I also think it is great that you started TKD! I don't think it matters when you start it. Starting something new requires courage! I'm so proud of you. I'm glad you're doing something your daughter and you can enjoy.

I have taken my medication into my own hands, and trying something new, then i can get serious at the gym and feel human again instead of the 80yr old that i feel like at the moment. Also, cut out refined sugar, its a killer x

I understand what you are saying. I am 42 and I have been over weight just about all my life and in the last 5 and half years I have lost around 141 pounds. I decided that dieting didn't work for me so I just started watching what I eat, portion control is what its called I think. I keep fruits in the house so when I want something sweet I grab one of them. Now, if I want a candy bar I will it it because if I don't then when I do I eat 2 instead of just one. I also started taking Tae Kwon Do. LOL, me at 42 just now taking Martial Arts it sounds so funny when I say it but I feel better and more healthy than I did when I was 22. Plus, TKD is something my 15 year old daughter and I do together so it is also bonding time.

Lately I just can't seem to get the motivation to go to gym and skip at any chance that I get. I have noticed that I am gaining weight and have no motivation to do anything about it at the moment.

Being over 40 and with 4 children I never thought I would get my body back. First, it was just putting the time aside to spend time for myself at the gym. Once I started going on a regular basis I found like I like pilates. It has now been 3 years of doing pilates and going to the gym and I am more fit then I was in my younger years. Find an exercise program that works for you and you have to set some time aside each day just for you. It will come back you just have to work a little harder.

Hi ...thank you for starting this group. I have been working out for a year for 40 minutes before work/4 days week. I vary exercise tapes...mostly ballet, yoga, turbo jam, dance. Also I am on my 6th week of a "couch to 5k" program that I found online. I am maintaining my weight...but would like to lose 10 lbs. Since, I think I do a good job with exercise, I think if I would make better food choices maybe I would start losing...maybe???

I've lost 115 pounds over the past four years which I guess means two things. First, I have had just about every bad eating habit there was, and second, I have had to really clean up my act. But I will say this, I am absolutely not a saint. The biggest thing for me was to admit that there is no off & on, no "I'm on a diet tomorrow, but out of control today," or "Now that I've messed up, I can eat whatever I want." What you eat is what you eat. It all counts. Learn to deal with your mess-ups without giving yourself permission to completely go nuts. They are a continuing part of life as is your weight and your health. I still eat ice cream, but only a few bites. (My husband orders his with an extra spoon.) I still eat French fries, but only a couple (it's called the "Mommy tax"), and with my salad, not a burger. Get honest with yourself and your weight will improve.

Losing weight after 40 is really hard! I have never had a weight problem until now! I am a mom with eight kids! through all my pregnancies I worked out and ate right! Bit after the last one eight years ago, I haven't been able to bounce back! I am 5ft 145. My normal weight is between 100-105. To complicate matters I think my hormons are all screwy! I crave all kinds of junk especially just before my cycle and they are increasingly harder to get through! Plus I seem to have fibromyalgia. I did not want to believe this when the doc said it but I don't know how else to explain it! I hurt all the time and when I do even minimal exercise I am in severe pain for days! I am currently doing a few free weight exercises for my arms and a couple of sets of squates for my legs. I also walk but even that has to be done slowly and carefully or else my hips become inflamed and I can't move for days! I am so frustrated thinking about how I used to run for miles etc no problem! I am currently attacking my eating habits by making it a point to eat fresh vegtables every day! My husband and I planted a garden so this is not hard! Any suggestions about exercise?

I have found a natural ingredient body wrap that works! How? It penetrates the cell wall and causes the lipids (fatty material) inside the cells to be released into the lymphatic system. The fat is then circulated naturally and carried out through the normal elimation process of the body. This is NOT a water loss wrap, you are encouraged to drink water. I lost 4 inches in my waist area on the first wrap and it is still off 2 months later! To learn more go to www.sassyaaron.itworks.net

One more thing, also try organic lemons, organic dark amber grade a maple syrup, and cayenne pepper (just a pinch) and make a tea. Lemons are for detoxifying the body, mainly the liver, maple syrup is for flushing out pus and mucus, and the cayenne pepper is for getting the blood moving in your system so that you will feel more energetic. Trust me, it really works. It is also a good measure to losing weight. And try taking New Chapter Vitamins for Women (purchase at whole food stores) these vitamins are also detoxifiers. Remember, to lose weight, eat more vegis and fruits, drink more water (alkaline) and exercise. The body needs to be cleansed first and then you will see the weight fall off. Trust me, I am 44 and I am a personal witness. But please, talk to your doc first in case you have High Blood Pressure, Heart Problems or other ailments that this remedy could interfere with. Many blessings

Wow this is great I am a 44 year old mother of 5 and grandmother of 2. I have been telling myself for quite sometime now that I need to loose this extra weight. It really wouldn't be as bad but the new laugh in my house that I tell about myself is that I have 2 families living in my stomach. We all laugh but that's how I feel. I've always been rather thin but once I hit 42 the weight started piling on. I also had a recent injury to my ankle which has caused problems with my leg so I can't walk on my leg to much, therefore deeming me unable to do the things I love. How I would love to get out and walk around the park with my grand babies. Oh how this is killing me. I'm so glad that you started this group Nori I think it's going to be helpful to quite a few of us. Thanks for the great idea. Blessings everyone and good luck as we all endeavor to get fit for life. I aim to be that 70 year old fit woman who enjoys her grandchildren to the fullest. I can't wait to get the ball rolling.

One thing I have started eating is more natural foods and drinking alkaline water all through the day. Alkaline is totally different from bottle or tap water. It is actually charged ionized water that is filled with calcium and magnesium. Check out Heaven's fresh website to learn more about alkaline. Our bodies are acidic which causes us to have more diseases such as heart, cancer, diabetes, and we age quicker. We have so much impurities in our water and it is literally killing us. Our bodies were made alkaline but the things we ingest in them is what's killing us. Please go to the website. But I do agree, exercise, along with eating and drinking properly will slow down the aging process and we can live with less pain. God bless each of you

I have recently put on over a stone after a hysterectomy in December. My clothes are tight and uncomfortable and I feel bloated and, quite frankly, fat!! I've started to eat smaller portions and don't eat at night any more. I've also bought the Jane Torvil workout which is brilliant. I'm going to Spain in two weeks so am doing the exercising more that my regular 3 times a week. When I stick to the routine it works and hopefully I can shed these extra pounds. As for still running around when I'm 70 Nori I think its your mind as well as your body that needs to be active.

After gaining after each of my 3 pregnancies and not losing after each, I finally joined a gym and got a personal trainer right off the bat. I worked out 3-4 times a week, starting with cardio for about 20 min and then lifting weights. Within about two months I noticed a significant difference; after about 3 months I went from a very tight 14 to a super fit 10. But then early last year I had to have back surgery, which put weight lifting on the back burner for a long time. With doing just cardio, my body is not the same. I have snuck back up to a tight 12. I found when I was lifting (light) weights, I was burning calories throughout the day; unlike cardio where you just burn as you do it. I'm finally to a point where I can start lifting weights again, and I can't wait to get my size 10's back on!
