Well, she told me when she was about 10 that she wanted a tattoo. I bought her a picture when she was 11 of a fancy fairy picture and she said that is what I want my tattoo to be like. So, last week was the day she used her money to get her tattoo on 3/4 of her back. I wanted to cry. I was hoping that she would have changed her mind after all the those years of telling her no. I'm learning that she has vision, different then mine, of how she wants to live her life and make her own decisions. This is hard..... maybe the other 2 children will listen to me...LOL

Good Luck with having them listen.. My 21 year old has 10 tattoos. They are all tastefully done and it was what she wanted and she has a mind of her own.. You have to let them do what they want and hope they make the right choices. As long as they tell you about it, thats not so bad.

My husband and I have several tattoos and my daughter will probably have some when she is older. She is 11 now but has been saying for a year or more that she wants to be an tattoo artist. My husband also dabbles in the field of tattoo art. He is learning under supervision. But I think that everyone makes there own decisions and this is definately better than a drug addiction or alchohol addiction. In my area you can get a tattoo no matter your age as long as you have parents consent. So half the high school is tatted up and pierced.

I am sorry to hear about Jill. That is horrible. The same thing happened to one of the kids that went to the same high school as my daughter. He was in a car accident. Can't remember if it was the weather conditions or if they were drinking. I'll have to ask my daughter. Then there was another kid that had a heartattack right after their basketball game. That was very sad. My daughter took that one hard cause they were really good friends.

But back to the tatoo. See I do not want to even experience the paid as it is happening. I remember when I daughter got hers she complained for a couple of days after that is was tender. Poor kid. A friend of mine got one on her foot and he hobbled around for week. I think that was because he cousin had a tatoo party and that could not have been very clean. Ha! Ha! Ha!

LOL Arnette your so funny!! I didn't think they hurt all that bad. It was like a sunburn it hurt at the time but it went away before I walked out of the shop. The one on my right calf hurt. BUT the kid that did it was new at tattooing. First thing I learnd the hard way. Go to someone that has been doing it for a VERY LONG TIME. The one on my calf was my second so I knew what to expect. ALSO my right leg is my bad leg. I have RSD in my right leg from my hip to my toes. So no more messing around with it. I was 14 when I knew I wanted a tattoo or more LOL. At the time it was not something a "Good Girl" did. I got my first tattoo when I was 39 years young LOL. The tattoo I have on my right leg is in memory of my very best BFF's daughter. She was killed when she was 18 years old and just shy of 2 weeks after she had graduated from high school. I got it one week after her death. It will be 4 years this June 8 that we lost Jill. It was my way of remembering her forever all my life. She was like one of my own kids.

Julie you are brave. I always wanted one but I do not like pain. Everyone says if you can give birth you can do anything. Well, I will not have anymore children. As I said I always wanted a tatoo, but I know I would not want to keep the same tattoo. So I put fake ones on when I go out to be sexy mamma and I can change where I put them.

I have 2 tattoo's. I have always wanted one. I got my first tattoo when my son was in his frist year of collage. My baby brother gave it for me for Mother's Day 5 years ago. I got it the night before we went to get Jon from school and move him back home for the summer. I have one on each leg. I can cover then up or show them off when I choose to. It was less then a month and I had Jon getting his first tattoo. I took him to the same guy that did mine. He is my baby he is now 24. Tattoos are not for everyone I will give you that. They are a forever kind of thing. I would like to get 3 more. I know what I want and where I want to put them. They are not my hubbys kind of thing. He likes mine but does not want one himself.

I agree. Don't think she thought about all of that but it is hers to deal with now.

The only problem that I see is when they have to get a job. If it's in an area that it can be seen and if it's inappropriate, it cause a problem. They need to think about this when getting one

I know my now-9yo will be the first of my 4 to get a tattoo. I only hope I beat her to it, maybe we'll go together, lol. In MI you have to be 18, so she'll have to wait, unless I take her.

Tattoos are really no big deal in today's society, and they definitely don't mean a life off the deep end, either. Now, if there are other life choices in question, I'd deal w/those before the tattoo, personally.

I understand what you mean. My daughter got hers when she was 18. She had not turned 19 yet. She was in a rebelious stage. It's a beautiful tatoo, but it's permenant. I love tatoos I think some of them are really cool but they don't go away. She hasn't gotten the feeling to get another one thank goodness but what can you say?

i would be glad it wasnt her first bag of cocain or blow and be happy it wasnt her first arrest or DUI....there are worse things that could happen. this is her way of self expression; she was old enough and it comes down to letting her live her life and be proud she was respectful to wait until she was old enough and not go and get it done illegally by what could have been damaging results.

Tattoos are a form of expression, when my son got his I told him to think long and hard about what and lades. here he put it. He loves music....his is a colage of music notes he drew on the back of his calf. He put it there so if he wants to show it he can, and if he is a work he can cover it. I got my first tattoo at 33 with my two sisters. We all have a sun and two stars...we have each others initials in the stars and all three of us have them between our sholder blades. Try to keep an open mind about it.

This is where she will learn to make better decisions. Unfortunately we can talk until we are blue in the face but sometimes they have to learn lessons on thier own. There may come a day when she will regret what she did and hopefully that will allow her to make better decisions. If she is truly "ok" with her decision then you need to let her enjoy her tatoo! Hard to do , I know but we must let them grow up and make choices for themselves. I have a tatoo on my foot and it took me about a year to decide what I wanted and where to place it. I put a lot of thought into it and I was 40 at the time. I love it and i'm glad I did it, but I thought it out quite a bit first. It's a wolf, which is my tribe totem, I am part Wompanoag Indian, so it has significant meaning behind it for me.

How old is she? My daughter got a tatoo when she turned eighteen. Funny thing was that it was during church family camp in Santa Cruz, Ca. Now she's nineteen and on her own. She talks about future tattoos. I've seen pictures of her friends multiple tatoos and cringe. This generation has a fascination for tatoos and it's not going to go away anytime soon.

I told my son that he had to be 18 before he would be able to get a tattoo, and I wouldn't pay for it. Well, he has gotten a tattoo every year on his birthday since he was 18. :( - He has around 6 or 7 tattoos. And they are not all hidden. which he has had to wear long sleeve shirts in the summer to work, to hide his tatts on his arms.
My daughter, who I thought would never have tatts, got her first tatt when she was 18 or 19. She's 21 and she has 4 or 5 tattoos. What's a mother to do? You try to tell them but they will never understand. someday I hope to look at them and say, I tried to tell you..lol

Pick your battles! I asked my daughter to wait until she had decided upon a profession. She turns 21 today and has three tats. I'm just thankful they are where you can't see them.

You are so right, her vision is different. I try to instill a little of my vision in her too, along with the values that I was taught as a kid. My daughter is rebellious to, but she really is a good kid, even if she is only 15. We as parents have a long, long way to go. LOL

You have the right idea... she has a vision, different than yours...afterall, people are different. My daughter 18 is sooo rebellious that I could just scream. I pray daily that what I have instilled in her at a young age will carry her thru. No matter how hard we try as parents, kids will be kids. Rebell or Agree, we will love them unconditionally. Hang in there. She is alive and healthy. It could be much worse.

She is going to do whatever she wants to do. Give her your honest opinion, and some advice, and maybe she will listen. LOL Good Luck.

Also have her talk to your son about his and what she will need to do to take care of it.

My son got one when he was away at college, He didn't tell me until he came home one year. I was afraid of what it was going to be but I was happy with it. It was a picture of a cross with the words God's Property on it. It is his only one. He's 29 now.

I am letting my daughter, 15, get a tattoo for a x-mas present. I decided that IF I was going to let her get one that I wanted to know the person, I want it done with all safty precautions that I can think of. I have always wanted one too, but never did. Hers is going to be a star, that will be hidden under her clothes 99% of the time. Between her hipbone and her belly button. I told her that it is her body, her decision, and her life. This is permanent and will most likely be with her for the rest of her life. I just had restrictions on where the tattoo is placed. In the future, when she is working she will want to cover it up, so I didn't want it to show when dressing for everyday. Am I wrong, should I have said NO??? Most of the people I know think that it is terrible that I am letting her have a tattoo on her body. I'll bet your daughters tattoo is beautiful. If is has some deep meaning to her, tell her how beautiful it is.

You know it was strange for me too when my daughter got her tattoos (4 in total now)... however as she tells me all the time her generation will be the generation where it is normal for grandma's to have tattoo's. You will get used to them!
