Looking for others who have taken on the responsibility of raising grandchildren...At 56 years of age,and two children who are 35 and 33 years old, I should be thinking of retirement...instead I'm thinking about PTA meeting, after school programs, Hannah Montanna, playgrounds. Lots of work and seems harder at my age...but I know it's best for the girls....

Jane hello,
My Husband and I are 49 and 47 respectively.We are raising and have custody of our 3 year old grandson. Our son is 27. I know what you mean about things being different. Had you asked us 5 years ago we would have laughed at the notion of raising another little one. But even prior to our Grandsons birth the marriage between our son and his soon to be ex was deteriorating. From the git go our Grand spent about 90 % of the time with us. When the situation in there home deteriorated to the point of being dangerous we sought legal advice and sought custody. Niether of them contested it. I look at this prescious little blonde haired, blue eyed little guy and cant fathom how anyone would willingly let him go.
We have had to rethink our retirement plans and pretty much readjust to having a little one in the home again. Our quiet time is now filled with outings and potty training and storytime at the Library., But we would not change a thing!!! He has brought so much joy and happiness to us. And we are blessed with good careers that make the financial end so much easier than when our Son was born.
I applaud you for stepping up to the bat and caring for your Grandaughters. It is a lot of hard work but the rewards are endless! Feel free to respond back and share your experiences. Do you have legal custody? The whole legal thing is just draining. Glad to meet someone in the same boat!

There is another woman in the same boat you are somewhere else in this group... married 30 years.... you should meet!
