Hi, its my first time writing, I am 48 the mother of 4. A 22 yr old son, 20 yr old daughter, 17 yr old daughter and a 14 yr old son. My problem is with my 14 yr old who has hated school since he was in senior kindergarten. When Mark was born he had no hearing and was given tubes which allowed him to hear, he had speech therapy as well. the problem is we found out that his hearing is acute which means if he is in a crowd his hearing would be muffled unless spoken to directly. When he was in public school he was the fall guy if anything went wrong even tho he may have not been the person to start things. Well Mark is now in grade 9 having just finished the first semester and I get a call saying he did not get any credits. I am so at a loss as to what to do with this child, has anyone out there got any true methods to help me with him, we have tried everything from counselling to taking away priveliges. HELP PLEASE!!!!!!1

Ruth, You are speaking my language!

I am 43 and a mother of 5. Angela 25, Alexandria 15, Michaela and Christina 13 year old twins, and Max 12. My twins were born with Bilateral Sensual Neural Hearing loss. We went through the tubes thing. However their hearing loss is severe and they both require hearing aids. The twins are in the 8th grade. We are constantly having trouble with them in school. Our ‘older’ twin has improved so much that she ‘graduated’ out of Special Education this year. Michaela had a Reading Teacher in the 6th grade that kept her from participating in as extracurricular event because she was failing reading at that time. Lo and behold, Michaela discovered that she could make good grades in the 7th grade. She was recognized for receiving very high scores on the standardized Math exam given to Texas 7th graders AND was only 2 points away from being on the “A/B” honor role for the year (again, reading was the problem).

Then there is Christina! Oh my! She failed almost every class last year as well as the TACTS (?) that are ‘required’ for all Texas 7th graders to pass and go on to the 8th grade. I was extremely upset that the school district just ‘passed’ her on without even discussing the matter with us. THEN Christina was caught stealing from other girls' purses. The amount was over $40 and yet less than $50, Christina was ticketed by the local police department and not taken to Juvenile Detention. That is when we started counseling. Christina has also exhibited a lot of anger issues both at home and school. We have recently been told by local police that anger is a problem with persons with hearing/speech problems. We have also noticed that while at school, our twins are easy targets for bullying and ‘Mean Girl’ behavior. My twins are very socially immature. It is as if they cannot pick up on the social ques that other kids their age exhibit (?). Does that make sense?

I was beginning to think that I was the only parent having these problems.

I don't know what to say about 'fixing' things. We have found counselling to help a lot, but we went through a lot of councelours to find one that works. He is currently working with Christina and Max (who does not have hearing loss, but anger and being bullied issues) as well as meeting with us, the parents, to do family counseling and brain storming.

Have you ever considered home schooling?
