Hi I'm 42 with a 17year old, 15 year old, and a 5 year old. Nobody has called me grandma BUT lots of people think I've started a new family with a 2nd husband. My answer is "Nope....same old husband just like him a lot."

My 15 year old seems to be asked if my 5 year old is her daugher quite often. She gets very frustrated and points out she would have been 9 years old and pregnant....STUPID! I tell her to take it as a compliment to her babysittiing skills.

absolutely, when I'm out with my little ones(41/2 & 9months) and my 21 yr old people assume she is the mother and ask her about them instead of me, the're always surprised when I answer, but it doesn't really bug me, although I have found it easier to get to know other moms at school and activities since I started dyeing my gray, it seems as if younger moms now see me as mom instead of gramma, and can approach me easier.

I just wanted to say, "Don't let it get to you". I don't think people mean to offend; they've just made a mistake. After I had my children (and now still) i've had a paunchy round bellly. I have the opposite problem. I have strangers/store clerks ask me how far along I am and/or when is my baby due? I think I'd rather have your issue. Lots of luck and love! Just be glad you all have beautiful children for people to comment on. They are truly blessings. Sincerely, Tina G

My sister made a joke out of this at one point. She is 51 with 11 year old twins. I am 47 with a 10 year old. My sister had a t shirt made that simply stated " I am the Mom' . I laugh when people call me grandma because my special little girl will laugh and look at me so very lovingly and say well hi grandma. It had become a joke with us.

Hi Tammy.... I didn't have my son until I was 40. My stepchildren were 19 & 17 at the time. For the 1st Fathers Day with the new baby, I had a portrait done of all 3 kids for my husband - it eerily looks like a young family!

I've been called 'Grandmom' when my stepdaughter has been out with us because everyone assumes my son is hers. I blow it off (and try to keep up with my dye jobs .LOL.). Yes, I'll be 59.5 when he starts college. Husband will be 65. We take each day & live in the joy of our son's laughter...

Hi Tammy

It is not uncommon. I am 45 and I have a son who is 23 in the Navy. Due to family circumstances, I just adopted three of my relatives, ages 3 and 1. Someone was walking by our apartment not too long ago while we were on the balcony and said my grandchildren were beautiful. 1st, I didn't think I looked that old and 2nd, I was almost angry at the suggestion that I couldn't possibly have children that young. Then I got over it, told him they were my children, and he kept walking.

It's going to happen and the biggest thing is your reaction to the situation. Laugh it off and say, something like, Yes, my children are beautiful. Have a good day.

Best wishes with your joyful little girl.

Quoting Tammy:Hi Tammy my name is Gwen I truly understand how you feel. For the last 17 years I have had to explain that my son was my son and not my grandson. I am now 55 and he is 17 and a senior in high school. I guess people are use to seeing babys having babies. I do have a almost 32 year old which I was 23 when she was born and 38 when my son was born.I just ignore them now and walk away. But some time I DO FEEL I AM THE OLDEST MOTHER AROUND WHEN MY SON ARE ATTENDING FUNCTIONS. I DO NOT KNOW WHY SOME PEOPLE OR SO  so what ever you want to call them but I am here to tell you it want get any better as time pass.

why do they always think that just because you are over 40 with a child under 18 that you are there grandmother grrrr
