I would like to have another child, but get scared about all of the ominous warnings about having children past the age of 40. Any advice or encouragement on getting pregnant at 41? ;-)

Hi Jennifer

Were you trying to conceive or did it just happen?

I had two children by age 27 and was divorced at 32 and fibroids removed a few months ago. Now engaged and 41, I am also pregnant. Prior to trying I had a full medical work-up including blood work which included a test to check my egg quality. Egg quiality below a ten is great. Personally I changed my diet and began eating healthier and started a lite work out. I also began taking prenatal vitamins with DHA as my doctor directed.
Now entering my 8th week, we are excited, anxious and feel extremely blessed. My mother had her last child (my brother) at 44 years old at 11 lbs so I am very hopeful.
Don't feel discouraged. Enjoy trying, stay healthy and see a fertility specialist for guidance and support.

God Bless!

Go for it!!! If you are healthy, go for it!

I had a child with special needs when I was 21! I wouldn't change ANY of it. I am now 42 and wish that I could get pregnant again. I have 4 kids total and it doesn't look like we will be able to have any more biological children...adoption is my next step to continue my family growing...biology doesn't necessarily make a family...love does.

I agree with you, Andrea. There are too many scare stories and negative opinions about women who have children later in life.

Ladies, there are thousands of women getting pregnant after the age of 40, either by conceiving naturally or with IVF. Some women are getting pregnant into their 50's!

I conceived mine naturally at 41 and 44 and have spent years researching this subject because we face a unique set of challenges. If there's one thing I've learned, the unique journey of being an older mother only begins at conception--after that, you're dealing with a medical profession that labels you "advanced maternal age", social isolation for being the "oldest mom" in the schoolyard, dealing with menopause and the stress of raising young kids.

However, the important things is get the support and advice you need, especially from other older moms. It's been a life saver for me. For anyone thinking of later motherhood, there's a free natural fertility tip sheet for conceiving after 40 at: http://flowerpowermom.com/wp-content/upl... You can also get support and expert advice at the not for profit site on later motherhood at: http://www.flowerpowermom.com.

There are tons of new older mom blogs out there too, like, www.mommyinthemiddle.com--all you need to do is search for them! We're not alone! :)

I did : ) And now have a healthy, happy little girl. I was 41 when I got pregnant and 42 when I gave birth. It was a little harder, I suppose, but the worst part were the scary stories I heard from friends and doctors. My daughter has no physical or mental issues. And many women are having babies at our age : )

First, don't worry. Second... I had my second at 42. My good friend had her first at 41. Just eat all the nutrients your body needs - no junk food. Two doctor/authors are recommended: Dr. Joel Fuhrman (believe he has a book on pregnancy and feeding babies/toddlers) and Dr. Bob Sears of the Sears Pediatric family. Both have websites. Follow their advice - best I know of !

See the Center for Human Reproduction and Dhea. Get an electronic fertility monitor and make every month count. I got pregnant for the first time at 41 and delivered a healthy baby girl at 42. We had very little help but are trying again and it's proving to not be as easy. I don't know what my energy level was in my twenties...I don't remember...but I LOVE being a mom in my forties. Since I don't remember how much energy I had...now I just do what I do and never think about how much more tired I am than the younger moms on the playground. Not entirely sure I am more tired. Being a mom by definition carries a huge energy toll.

I had my daughter at the age of 42 and it was the best thing I ever did, I found myself being more patient and having more time to spend with her. She was born happy, healthy and beautiful. Go for it and get pregnant at 41, you will be glad you did.

The good part about getting pregnant at 41 is that this is not your first child. I had my one and only at the age of 43 and was subsequently diagnosed with diabetes. I also have mentally & physically developmentally challenge people on my side and my husband's side of the family. Needless to say I was VERY high risk. But now my son is an 11 year old who is healthy, intelligent and is the love of my life along with my husband. From your picture you look healthy and vibrant so my words to you is: GO ON GIRL!!! And good luck getting pregnant at 41 and God bless you and your new baby!!!

i wasn't going to have anymore children after my 10 year old was born but got pregnant. they tried to have me take the test that could make me lose my baby and said i didn't want it. i took my chances and had a healthy baby girl. even though i had no plans of having another child at the time i am so blessed to have her. she is so beautiful and intelligent. i had a hysterectomy after that when i had tumours removed that came back. people made me feel too old to have another child with my 4 yr old. i wasn't going to have an abortion. i was 37 when i got pregnant with my youngest child.

Hi, I fell pregnant at 40 and had my daughter a week before I turned 41. I don't really know about all the things you hear about people having babies when they are older, many couples are waiting until late 30's to start their families these days and lots of younger couples have had babies with disabilities.

I was told that I had a one in 12 chance of having a down syndrome baby just from my age alone, I decided to do the blood test and scan where they measure the neck thickness and was told that it didn't look good and the doctor strongly recommended that I do chronic villious(sp?) test that in itself could cause me to lose the baby.

I decided against this and had a perfectly healthy baby girl.

I mentioned this in another post, years ago our great grandmothers had children from an early age until their bodies could bear no more and many of them would have been in their 40's. It's a shame that society has become so judgemental these days, you are too young, too old etc.

I am so happy I had my youngest daughter, she is a ray of sunshine in our family and has brought me and my older kids closer, she keeps me young and makes me smile every day.

There are no guarantees to life but you can't let that stop you. Go for it and try getting pregnant at 41! I didn't meet the person that I wanted to have children with until my late 30's. I had my first child at 37 and my second at 41. Both are healthy, happy and smart. I will warn you that your energy isn't the same in your forties as it is in your thirties. So take good care of yourself. I am 45 now and loving it. If you look around you will find a lot of women in their 40's just having kids.
