First - let me say that I am not one of those moms that solicits anything. I'm the mom that buys all the kids school charity stuff just so I don't have to make anyone else feel awkwardly obligated to buy the $15 roll of Christmas wrap.

With that being said... when I find a product or program that I think is really great, I do want to share the benefits (especially with other moms). So "The Paul Green School of Rock Music" has inspired me to post my first "conversation" on this board. I can't speak to all of the schools across the nation, but my family's experiences with the Downtown San Diego School have been phenomenal!

My 16 year old son and 10 year old daughter both absolutely love this program! Our son has been in the program for almost 2 years and our daughter started about 8 months ago. They get amazing one on one weekly instruction in instruments of their choice (advanced guitar for one and beginning vocals for the other). The instruction covers from the basics up to very advanced theory, depending on the current skill level of the child. The instructors are simply awesome. They communicate with the kids on their level, but push them to do their very best.

My kids also spend 3 hours each weekend collaborating with a larger group of kids to prepare for a live show held about 3 times a year at a real music venues here in San Diego. Past seasons have showcased the music of Pink Floyd, Best of the 90's, Funk and Reggae, The Who, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, David Bowie and Punk Rock. The two shows for this current "season" are Black Sabbath and Indie Rock. Being involved in this peer group encourages the kids to learn the material so they practice (without you having to tell them). The result of their hard work is playing rock music in front of a live audience and that is a huge contributor to keeping the kids "addicted" to their love of music. As a parent, I can say that the some of the most proud moments I have had were watching my kids flourish up on that stage.

In addition to the regular curriculum, there is an opportunity for those kids who are more advanced to try out for an internal "HouseBand" program. This allows kids with higher level skills to learn more songs, work with a group of kids at their same level and the opportunity to perform many more live performances throughout the city. Additionally, there are other opportunities that arise for kids who are ready to escalate further. My son has had the unique opportunity to play with Jon Anderson from the band YES at major music venues. Additionally, he also went on a two week bus tour across five states with 25 of the best kids from the West Coast Schools. These "extra benefits" are my son's favorite aspects of the school.

From the individual and group instruction to the live performances, the staff at our local branch is the glue that makes this a phenomenal opportunity for our kids. They are encouraging, respectful and provide an excellent learning environment for kids interested in developing their musical talents.
