I have a 20 month old son who absolutely LOVES Jason Mraz, and a variety of hippie and jam band music. He loves Grateful Dead, as well as modern bluegrass. My husband and I are both musicians and songwriters, so he gets a lot of exposure to many different styles of music. We bought him the Baby Einstein CD's and he likes those, but not like he loves the other music we play. We just try to make sure he's listening to positive music.

Wonderful replies! Children need to hear all styles of music. Keep in mind that it is not the style of music that can be hurtful to children but the lyrics! Programs that use a variety are good exposure for children and good for parents as well. Many are out there. Make sure the music is good quality and a mix of genres. A few would include -- Music with Mar., Music Together, MusikGarten. There is much information on this that airs on http://www.bamradionetwork.com/index.php...
Give a listen and share your thoughts!

Love this question! The little ones like pretty much everything : ) I play the piano and my mother (who watches them while I am working) teaches. So they have all had a lot of exposure to anything on the piano. My three year old and 8 month old love anything that has any kind of beat.

I love taking my 3 year old to worship service with me at church because she really enjoys the music and wants to sing along and my 8 month old always laughs when I sing to him (don't know if that's a good thing).

My teenagers : ) - A few years ago I started listening to a christian radio station. My boys both really caught on! They now listen to a lot of christian rock and we are constantly going to concerts together. Even the little ones come with us and everyone has loads of fun : ) In addition, the boys have studied the piano as well as brass instruments (trumpet and trombone) and we are in the works of finding a good guitar instructor for my 13 year old son.

Plus they have to put up with my old "boring" music of all types : ) We must keep them well rounded : )

My little one is still baking, lol, but that doesn't stop me from playing a wide variety of music :)

I play anything from Black Label Society to Josh Groban frequently.
I don't listen, nor like country and rap at all, so there really isn't any of that played around here :P
But I'd hope for my son/or daughter, to be open minded and explore music creatively.

My son is almost 6 months old, and we listen to just about everything. I teach piano, and voice lessons, so my son has been exposed since he was in the womb. :) Currently, he responds well to many different types of music that I play personally or that we listen to, however his absolute favorite is when I sing to him. He lights up... gets really excited no matter what I'm singing. Loves it.

Hi....new to this group. Was a choral singer for years but stopped when I had my son. So of course I expose my son to vocals more than instrumentals. He is 7 and right now is really into rock with Daughtry and Boston being his favorites of the moment. But he also enjoys Huey Lewis and Josh Groban. We try to expose him to a varity of appropriate music, but he dosen't usually want to listen to it... he has his faves and he sticks to them. :)

We do a wide variety also. I let the boys enjoy their music, which is Imagination Movers, Dan Zanes, and Laurie Berkner. I also make sure that they listen to my music as well, which is classic rock and alternative rock. We also do a lot of classical music. They recognize a lot of it because they enjoy watching Little Einsteins. And although I don't enjoy country/blue grass/folk music it's hard to get around it while in Kentucky. So, they've been exposed to that genre as well. I will not allow them to listen to rap or hip hop. Mostly because I just can't stand it. I'm sure some day they'll come home listening to it though.
