I have always been told that the baby will let you know when they are done. I stopped nursing at 18 months only because it waas becoming painful and if my daughter sees me without a shirt she still wants to nurse and she is 2. I think you should let your baby tell you when they are done.

How old is your child now? Nursing a child is the best option you can offer your child verses formula feeding. However, by six months you should or probably will have introduced some baby foods- cereal, strained fruits and vegetables for beginners. The baby should be having three meals a day and even possibly two snacks in addition to breastfeeding probably somewhere around five times a day, give or take. There comes a time when children are not getting enough nutrients from breastfeeding alone, and if they are having the three meals and snacks, then they are definitely getting enough of what they need-if their diet is healthy. I have found that as I introduced new and nutritional foods to my children in conjunction with my breastfeeding, their interest in breastfeeding often diminished as they became more interested in and consumed more adult foods. Breastfeeding is a most wonderful gift that you can share with your child. It is the one thing that you as a mother can solely provide for your child, which is very fulfilling and satisfying as a mother. However, ask yourself if you are breastfeeding your child at an age when it is beyond the primary source of nutrients for their growing body. Is it something that you are doing for their benefit or for yours? I breastfed my two children until they were 13months old and weaned them gradually in the manner to which I explained, reducing their breast milk intake as they ate more adult foods and lost interest. It was a sad day and I cried, but it was time. I missed doing it, but both girls handled it well. I reduced feedings at the end to morning and before bed. Finally to just before bed. When they woke in the morning it was easy to make breakfast with the rest of the family so they could eat right away when they would be looking for the breast. We would nurse at night as part of the bedtime routine. When nursing at night turned to less than 5min each breast, it was becoming pointless. Soon a small glass of something to drink took its place and the breastfeeding era was over. Waiting to long to wean may cause some other problems such as difficulties for the child when it comes to independence and learning to function in other social routines that we have carved out in our society.

AND... LOL People will give you so much heat, but you know what. It's an awesome thing you can do for your child, and if your comfortable, it's no ones concern. I know people that nursed until their child was 5+
