Is there anyone who has been signing, or has started signing with their baby?

I think it's a wonderful tool to teach your children. I also think that it will help them in the long run since school systems teach signing as a second language now. School is hard these days and just keeps getting more difficult, a leg up in one subject can be tons of help! I know that's a long way off, but you have to start somewhere right? Keep up with it and I think you will all get great benefit from it. If you would like some additional tools to use, try Signing Time DVD's, my kids will sit in front of them forever if I let them :)

Thanks for the encouragement Dawn! We decided to try it, because we have heard that boys develop speach slower than girls, and figure it can't hurt!

We have had great luck with signing in our house. Both of our boys sign and have great verbal language skills as well. We love it because it's something we are all doing as a family and learning together. The key is repetition, repetition, repetition. Good luck with it, I hope you find as much joy and my family and I have.

I just started signing with my 7month old baby boy, we are using the book by Monta Z. Briant, Baby Sign Language Basics, and have high hopes! I was curious who has signed and if they had luck with it?

They say the best time to start with signing is when the baby can wave. However, I started with the signing cd's from about 3 months or so with my boys. I highly recommend Signing Time DVD. You can get them at www.signingtime.com

I absolutely love signing with my boys. My older one is teaching the baby and we all use it, even Daddy!!! In my job (insurance) I come into contact with a lot of hearing impared people and it's helped me tremendously. I'm also excited that sign is now offered in MD as a second language. I feel like my kids will be a bit ahead of the game :)

I started with my son at about 4 months now at 11 months he dose milk (he's alittle slow with it but thats ok) Then I started with my daughter at about 2-3 months she could sign tons of words by 1 yrs old. At age 2 she could over 300. Now that she 3 it's about the same I don't know any more lol. But we talk in sign lang. all the time to each other. It drives my husband crazy because he has no idea what were saying.

Thats great Dawn! Thanks for sharing your story!
We also love the signing time DVD's in our house. Even though I don't let my son watch too much tv (he is only 8 months) I do let him watch the signing time videos, and I enjoy them as well!
Give your 9 mo time! I'm sure he will catch on!! But with the success with your first born I am sure you know that :)

I highly recommend signing...it saved meand my kids a TON of stress!! It's great to see you all on here :) Keep up the good work and progress getting signing out to the hearing community!!! Thanks for all you do!!

I starting signing with my now almost 3 year old when he was 5 months. He took to it so wonderfully and we still use it today even though his verbal vocabulary is outstanding. I have had another child since then, he is 9 months old and is not picking up on the signing as well as my oldest. We still work with him on it though probably not as diligently as I did with Everett. It is on my list of things to do yesterday :) I highly recommend signing...only if it's ASL however. Now in a lot of schools, signing is a second language like Spanish or French and how wonderful to give our children a leg up. I think, IMHO, if we don't teach the universal language of sign, ASL, it may do more harm than good in the long run.
